There was plenty that was unfamiliar to him here. Buildings that rivaled Urithiru in height, strange fabrial machines that rolled through the streets without any visible propulsion that made faces and voices appear on panes of glass. Then there was the fact that none of the few people he'd spoken to even knew what a Highstorm was or when to expect the next one. There was a lot to make sense of.
But one thing he didn't need to spend any time thinking over was the sounds of distress and panic. It was all he needed to put his questions aside and take to the air.
"Kaladin!" Syl zipped up beside him as a ribbon of blue light before resolving into her form of a miniature young women and pointing down to a building, a hospital, where workers were scrambling to get people inside. "Down there!"
"I see it!" He replied and adjusted his Lashing, diving downward. He didn't have any stormlight beyond what he carried with him, he'd have to make it count.
Down below one of the monsters was almost upon its first victim, reaching out with those overlong claws before Kaladin swooped down with a battle cry. Syl vanished into silvery mist which reformed into a long ornate spear in his hand and he swung the point through the monster's head. The creature staggered, eyes burning away into black smoke and collapsed lifelessly. Kaladin floated a few feet above the ground, surrounded by a faint nimbus of blue light, his eyes glowing bright with the same color.
Well, at least now we know these things will die to a Shardblade. Kaladin thought before turning his head and calling back. "Get inside! I'll hold them here!"
Which... might be a tall order, he realized as more of the monsters assembled in front of him but he'd made an oath to protect others and that was exactly what he'd do here.
So much for stepping back from combat. He thought grimly, before readying himself for battle....
Diadem Hotel
And after all... that, now is finally the time to attempt to adapt to this new city and all the strange things about it. First things first, he needed to secure supplies.
After the battle against those monsters he'd been intercepted and given something called a "credit card" which he'd been assured would pay for whatever he needed. Which was odd and was even odder when he'd left it on the counter at a shop after buying food only for the clerk behind it to chase him down and insist on returning it. Apparently he just had to show this thing to get what he needed. Which, again, made very little sense to him because how could you buy something without any actual money exchanging hands? Why couldn't the people here just exchange spheres like any storming sensible person.
Syl at least seemed excited as they made their way down the streets, zipping this way and that as a streak of light, occasionally stopping to take her humanoid form, that of a tiny young woman made of blue light in a long dress. As Kaladin pondered things, Syl gasped and zipped over to a window.
"Kaladin! Come look at this!" She called, hovering in front of a rectangle shaped frame that showed moving images of various landscapes and odd, hair-covered animals.
"What about it?" He asked, stepping up to it and taking in the sight.
"It's amazing!"
"It's... a moving picture." He frowned, looking up as Syl zipped up in front of his face.
"You should get one." She exclaimed.
"What?"
"With that little square they gave you. Everyone just gives you stuff when you show it to them." She waved her hand back at the box.
"But we don't need a box with pictures that move."
"So?" She huffed, hands on her hips. "It would be nice to have! You don't have to only buy things you need, you can buy something fun too."
And so it went. Now, of course Kaladin knew one of Syl's abilities was to choose who she made herself visible to. But he didn't realize at the moment that was choosing to only appear to him.
Which meant anybody passing by would see an exceptionally tall man in a foreign military uniform holding a bag of groceries and arguing over buying a TV with thin air.
