TEST DRIVE MEME: MAY EDITION

TEST DRIVE MEME

A Confluence, capitalized, is the converging of one or more supernatural forces. Typically, a Confluence only occurs in one place at any given time. Typically.

These are not typical times.

Most of the Starfallen will arrive in Excelsior, Washington, slipping from the sky one by one, needing to be helped as they come floating down. To many citizens in Excelsior – individuals who are far from fond of metahumans – their arrival is a sign of bad things to come. It’s always a sign of bad things to come. This time, however, the bad things don’t come in the typical sequence. Instead, they’re dealing with a problem when the Starfallen begin to unwittingly arrive. What’s that problem? Plants with a rather problematic taste for flesh.

While Excelsior is hoping for spring to actually stick on the horizon, they’re warding off plants left and right. At least none of the plants seem to be able to spit fire – uh, yet?

In the midwestern part of the country, a huge barrage of rain has begun to settle over the land. Rain like this isn’t normal. Stormfronts usually keep moving forward, but this isn’t. And while rain isn’t a bad thing, this rain … is a deluge. A flood upon floods. Some Starfallen individuals will be showing up in the middle of this, arriving in both Little Love and Central City. Hope they can keep their heads above water!

Making matters worse is that everything seems a bit – planned? No, that’s not the right word. Like it’s all happened before. Or happening again. People all over are definitely noticing a strange uptick in déjà vu. Most worrying is how it seems to be happening everywhere.

EXCELSIOR

Ah, Excelsior – the city that doesn’t ask “why” something should be explored, but how quickly it can be explored. If only someone there had developed a swift measure to deal with a sudden influx of killer plants! The good news is that these plants haven’t killed anyone – not yet, anyway – but there is all the time in the world for that to change.

As the Starfallen arrive, they’re unlikely to notice the plants, and instead will see technological marvels all around them. Although Excelsior isn’t fond of Starfallen, they like the idea of welcoming them and getting them the hell out as quickly as possible. This philosophy results in all of the Starfallen being guided down to the ground, with further instructions awaiting them once they’re on two feet. (Or four. No one’s judging!) But once they land, they’re likely to notice that things aren’t the way they’re meant to be.

After all, someone in Excelsior failed to ask “why it’s bad to create an incredibly unlikely strain of plants that is genetically inspired by snapdragons, the flowers from those plumber games, and piranhas,” and instead went ahead with “how quickly can I do it?” Their experiment proved to be far too successful, aided by cutting-edge bioengineering technology.

Even though all Starfallen are encouraged to depart for the Midwest after they receive their teleportation devices, it’s apparent that the people of Excelsior need help. Right now, their chilly reception can easily be written off as a symptom of what’s happening. Dealing with newcomers at a time like this? Preposterous! People are injured from wild, flesh-eating plants. Obviously!

So, kind Starfallen – whether you’ve just arrived or came by when you heard word of the Confluence of trouble – will you give these dour folk the hand they so desperately need?

THE MIDWEST

Elsewhere, both Little Love and Central City are experiencing a flood of problems. Most of the problems are the result of the flood. While Little Love is known to be the quieter of the cities in this Confluence-ridden world, it finds itself dealing with a torrential downpour that it’s never seen before. Meteorologists quickly note that this is unnatural. All the way from Kansas to Illinois to Michigan there is rain, rain for as far as the eye can see. Flood warnings have no end in sight, and the people in these cities have asked for help from outside. If this rain doesn’t stop, all summer crops will be at risk!

The source of these problems? A Confluence. More specifically: a five-year-old girl who was born in Little Love just got news that her father died in an accident. Combine that with the incoming Confluence and the girl unwittingly unleashed her sadness upon the land.

Anyone investigating would learn that the rain began in Little Love, right before it began to spread upward and outward from the little town. Soon, Kansas, and then the entire Midwest, would feel the impact of her grief. Even when she sleeps, it doesn’t go away – her pain is a constant, after all. Finding her is key. No one can truly prevent a child’s grief, but perhaps they can help her realize her impact on the world and get her newly-arrived power under control.

DIADEM HOTEL
Whether you’ve gone to investigate the rather moist trouble or you’re just looking for some shut-eye, you’ve got a place that’s waiting for you. Need to clean up some plant-induced wounds? It’s time to hit the LUXURY HOTEL to ease any concerns.

The DIADEM HOTEL is usually reserved for the obscenely wealthy. Its rooms are enormous, the beds quite literally enchanted to offer the perfect night's sleep, and the food would usually cost your life savings for just a small taste. But given the circumstances, the Guilds feel its the least they can do to aid your transition into this world. EVERYTHING is complimentary, and everyone gets an ALLIANCE CREDIT CARD to spend on entertainment, clothing, and whatever other necessities they might need. The cards have an obscenely high limit and there doesn't seem to be an expectation for you to pay it back... though if they catch you abusing it, their accountant will be coming for your head.

There's a shopping center immediately across the street. It has an impressive array of outlet shops that cater to your every need. Food, clothing... and swords? If you can think of it, it's for sale. Although anything clearly supernatural or metahuman seems to be at a minimum and offered under the table. You can grab clothing made to withstand any superpower and a surprisingly mediocre Taco Bell order while you're at it. There's a Super Cinema in the shopping complex across the street that's showing a film called BARKS OF THE DEAD, a story about a zombified dog who protects a small family during the zombie apocalypse. Despite its taste for other dogs’ brains, this dog is fiercely loyal and will do anything for its owners.

EVERYWHERE: DÉJÀ VU
Less obvious and more innocuous are the strange stints of déjà vu all over. At first, it might seem like it’s a familiar thing you’ve seen before, but then you’re certain that you’ve ordered those chicken tenders before. Wait, you haven’t even been to this city before, much less this restaurant.

The feeling of déjà vu isn’t just that. Whole days will begin to feel like they’re repeating – surely they’ve solved that rain problem? Or the plant problem? Didn’t you hear that it happened?

Anyone keen to take notes might want to – assuming you haven’t just gotten that you did and they’ve been lost to time.

CLIFF NOTES.

➢ New arrivals will be appearing in Excelsior, Little Love, or Central City – with the bulk of them arriving in Excelsior. Their arrival will be expected and handled by a number of odd pieces of technology that help them as they fall from the sky itself. None of the locals will be happy to see the arrivals, but they’ll be so frazzled that they won’t be able to give them their usual chilly welcome. Vicious plants are on the loose and it’s not a meta’s fault. This might be meaningless to newcomers, but anyone who’s old hat at this will know that Excelsior can cause its own problems just fine, thank you.

➢ Arrivals who land in Little Love or Central City will arrive to a lot of rain. This much rainfall can impact the climate, daily life, crops – you name it. Arrivals will also be very, very soggy. If they’d like, they can ignore the trouble in favor of getting answers or heading to the hotel. No one’s obligated to lend a hand.

Current Players are welcome to treat this as a bonus event. These events are canonically happening within the game but can be largely ignored if you'd prefer to use the month for personal plots. You can tag into the TDM, reference these prompts in network posts, or use them in your own logs.

➢ As for the time stuff, feel free to treat it as a wobbly time event! Mess with memories, get a character caught in the same day, or even just make someone feel like they’ve suddenly acquired precognition as a power. The sky’s the limit!

WILDCARD.
Metaheroes takes inspiration from all walks of comics. Take a look at the CITIES to get an idea as to what day to day life is like in the other cities. Perhaps you've encountered a supervillain (or hero) who needs to be thwarted, or a metahuman with unusual powers creating bizarre effects.

[Hey, it's a look. Gus learned a lot about human stuff during his stay in Gravesfield, but he learned some things about himself too: namely that he's amazing at human fashion. Or -and he can't totally rule this out- he just looks great in whatever he happens to wear. Regardless, when he gets a good look at Guy, he's very approving. His accessorizing is on a level Gus didn't even realize existed, and unkempt hair isn't really that out of the ordinary for witches.

He probably hides a lot of great stuff in there.]

Mostly because I just got tossed out of the place I tried to do this in.

[The carnivorous plants event made him misread the atmosphere of this new world. Turns out it's not like Bonesburough, where a muddy witch showing up to an establishment filled with rats and roaches to play with illusion magic wouldn't be likely to inspire comment.

Here, he just got thrown out of a really dirty bar. Minor blow to the pride, slightly more major blow to the tuchus. Big human cities are apparently harder to navigate than Gus thought and, right now, a lower priority than finding his way back. Not to mention some of the shops are closing for inclement weather and in the time he figured out where he could do this, he might just have it done.

...Something about this guy isn't quite typical of humans he's met, but it's hard to put his finger on. The ears are human, and maybe the hair's out of the ordinary but that's not quite enough.

But Gus doesn't get time to think about it. "Parents getting eaten by predators" is just close enough to what actually happened to his dad, or what might have happened, or could be happening right now because Gus doesn't know, that it makes his throat tighten and his breath hitch. He tries to swallow it down and bring up a chuckle..]

It's...It's complicated. But yeah, actually I think I'm the most lost I've ever been.

Nine months!? OK...what's the last thing you remember before you came here?

[The explanation a little more sense, but has also undone what little Gus had pieced together. Which wasn't much, best he'd come up with was something to do with time pools, but still.

Gus's brow furrows in concern. At least Hunter hasn't been totally alone the whole time, though maybe longer than he should have been. Amity and Eda are good company. Even though Eda started the whole "Goops" thing.]

Well, I tried! I just...got thrown out and figured I could get my bearings and get on my way at least as fast as I could find somewhere to do it. But I guess what's going on is more complicated than I thought.

[Guy hears the breath hitch, sees the look on the boy's face.]

[And he understands.]

[The story goes: Once upon a time, everywhere Guy went, there were three sets of footprints. The people those footprints belonged to were happy. Then the ground got jealous of how happy they were, and black mud bubbled up and ate two of the people those footprints belonged to.]

[And then there was only one small set of footprints, covered in mud. One set that trailed off a very, very long time; a very, very long way; before they stopped being alone again.]

[He'd been younger than the boy in front of him then. He'd think the world he faced was harsher, what with being filled with predators and wilderness, claws and teeth - except he knows how harsh places like this world can be. Places made of glass and stone and people that don't feel for others. The world like this that Guy just came from, the one that stole him away from home, almost broke him.]

[Maybe the boy in front of him has never been to a place like this before. That probably automatically makes it one of the scariest place he's ever been.]

Well lucky for you, I'm insanely good at getting un-lost.

[Congrats, Gus, a grown up is here.]

[He crouches down across from him, to be down on his level. He makes sure the umbrella is covering both of them, so no spattering of random rain drops or mist accidentally drips from the roof above.]

Are you from another world? If you are, you wouldn't be the first. This world has something broken about it. It pulls in people from other worlds. The people that live in this world call us all the Starfallen.

Is that what happened to you? You were somewhere else and then wound up falling here? [He points up.] I just fell here earlier this week.

Central City

[personal profile] ownchoices 2023-05-13 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
[ If she's honest, Amity way prefers Sunset Falls to Central City. Central City is just huge and bustling in a way not even Bonesborough ever was. Maybe it was because of all the cars? She misses just being able to walk where she likes and not having to be mindful of some massive speeding death machine running her down. She also misses flying, because this weather is definitely not good for it.

She's here, though, trudging down the street because Hunter had wanted her to meet his friends so of course they'd gone to the city and she'd ended up wandering off on her own and--well, she's here.

It's the glimmer of magic that catches her eye at first, the shimmer of a familiar illusion spell. She turns when it shines in the corner of her eye and realizes that she's looking at Gus, dressed in human clothes and crouched under an awning. She takes a step, not quite processing as she peers at him from under her umbrella. ]

Gus?

Gus, is that you?

The last thing that happened to me before I got here was that we just came through the portal to the human realm. We were about to go to Luz's home.

[So he's slightly behind. Which means there are several months of friendship he's missing. Several months of the two of them goofing around in the basement and having lots of little talks before bed.]

[But he's still so glad to see him.]

[ There's a low whistle, like a concentrated rush of air, and then an ornate boomerang whips by Gus from behind. It strikes the gaping maw of the carnivorous plant. A whirlwind comes with the boomerang, and the plant's appendages are swept up in the vortex for a moment.

While the plant's immobilized, Link runs up from behind Gus, stepping between the boy and the plant. He catches the boomerang and puts it away, then unsheathes his sword. ]

You okay?
paperclipsong: ([09])

[personal profile] paperclipsong 2023-05-13 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Whoa, seriously? When I got brought here we'd been at Luz's for months!

[That means Hunter doesn't have the memories he does: the fun they've had, the stress they've all been feeling, the ways they've all come together as friends, and all the ways he and Hunter have connected in that time.

But that's OK, right? Gus remembers, which probably means Hunter will still experience it too eventually. Whatever happens here will be on top of that friendship, however it goes.

What's actually frustrating is Gus lost the Cosmic Frontier novels, which he was so sure was going to be his in to help Hunter open up about being a Grimwalker. It just...hurts knowing his best friend was created by a guy who never intended to love him, and he can only guess how much more it hurts for Hunter.

Nine months is a long time though...maybe...]

I'm gonna guess a lot's happened to you since you've been here?
paperclipsong: ([11])

[personal profile] paperclipsong 2023-05-13 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
[Well, he seems kind. Gus has misjudged that in the past, but it feels real, and that's still good enough for him. He smiles slightly.]

Yes to...basically everything you just asked. And now I have to figure out a way back to where I came from so my friends and I can go home.

[Yep, two separate places. His situation is kinda convoluted.]

My name is Gus, by the way. Are you from the human realm?
paperclipsong: ([03])

[personal profile] paperclipsong 2023-05-13 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Amity?

[He pops up to his feet. Should he have expected to see her? He didn't, but maybe he should have. Maybe whatever happened grabbed them all? Would that be better?

Well...no, no, it wouldn't, but Gus's brain is a little overheated right now.]

What are you doing here?
paperclipsong: ([01])

[personal profile] paperclipsong 2023-05-13 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm good! I'm OK!

[Gus gets to his feet and throws the shovel down at his feet in frustration.]

You let me down, human shovel!

[Enchanted weapons are obviously the way to go here, he can see that now. He readies Emmiline's staff form to smack plants away or fly them out of here, depending on what goes down with this swordsman.]

( there is a brief pause as eda considers how to best explain this. it would have been a lot easier if she had been more forthcoming with raine in general, but she supposed it was about time for her to start eating crow. )

In the right one, humans don't have any weird powers or abilities. Neither do they know about them!

( she makes a dramatic gesture of covering one side of her mouth. )

Otherwise they'd have never let the giraffes stay.

( then a wave of the hand. )

That's just fantasy stuff for them. Here, it's real.

( eda takes the time to explain the concept of metahumans to them then. she's quite straightforward about it. humans with abilities like this are known as "metahumans" and that moniker also gets applied to non-humans as well as a bit of a shorthand. it just seems to be anything the majority of the human population consider abnormal. for better or worse, they were also considered metas and starfallen.

the human realm connected to the demon realm never had this issue. or any history of confluences like this one. otherwise she'd have heard of it. )

Yank!

( how's that for a greeting?

who doesn't appreciate their heroic knight in shining armour to actually be an old hag on a witches' staff reaching down to grab the scuff of their shirt like an overgrown child? while it's probably not in question that gus could take the plant or at the very least, eda could—it seemed annoying.

she didn't feel like fighting a plant right now.

much easier to grab him and start flying out of range of any hungry or vicious vines. )

[Two separate places. Another one like Guy who was in a different world than home. If he wants to go back, though, hopefully it's not a bad place.]

I can explain as much as I know. Which, to be fair, isn't as much as I'd like, but I at least was told the most important things about what's going on.

[Although, he wants to find a way to get Gus dry first. And maybe fed if he needs to eat. But first, introductions, and answering his question.]

I'm Guy. Guy Crood. [He raises his eyebrows as he considers the answer about the human realm.] And sorta? But also not. Not a human realm like this one anyway.

I was in a world that wasn't home before I got pulled here, too. It, uh... wasn't a very nice place. [There is the briefest flicker of something raw on his face but he plows past it and doesn't elaborate. This is a child. He doesn't need to know about any of that nastiness.] But I had good friends there. From lots of different worlds.

We figured out that I was either from very, very far in Earth's past, or from a world like Earth's past.

[His eyes go slightly wide.]

And when I say far, I mean far. We don't have writing yet back home, or anything more than stone tools, and the height of technology is rocks you can bang together to make fire. Very advanced stuff.

[He grins.]

Humans aren't brand new, but we're probably pretty young as a people. Hard to tell without history books. Or...any books.

[Oh, let's see, he made new friends, met another Grimwalker (sort of), tried to be homeless, got shot, nearly bled out on someone's rug in the arms of one of his new friends, got revealed as a Grimwalker to another friend, got shoveled into an alternate universe bubble where he was raised by Eda and Belos didn't exist, remembered his old life in a night of excruciating re-traumaziation, then inexplicably was taken in by the Owl Lady.]

[He pauses way, way too long, eyes a little too wide, as he tries to figure out what to say because it is a lot. And also he feels like Gus may perhaps have a thing or two to say about such choices as trying to live on the street out of a distrust of adults. (At least until Eda showed up.)]

[His voice goes slightly higher and faster the way it does when he's failing at lying or anxiously trying to reassure someone of something.]

Not that much! Just a totally normal amount of things.
paperclipsong: ([10])

[personal profile] paperclipsong 2023-05-14 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
[Does Hunter...not know he's bad at lying? Should Gus tell him?

Emmiline has uncurled and opts to crawl down Gus's shirt to share in the warmth of their hug, which Gus has decided to make a little tighter. He looks up at Hunter with concern and worry and lots of it.]

Hunter? You OK?

[He knows the answer's probably no.]

[What.

What.

Gus only registered the darkness across Guy's face for a moment, and maybe, maybe, he filed it away for later. But right now, his eyes are widening and his jaw is dropping. The more Guy talks, the more eager Gus looks.]

Oh. My. Titan!

[Very Serious Gus has fully been replaced with Shiny-Eyed Enthusiast 12-Year-Old Gus. He didn't even know what human history was like before the age of witch hunters and puritans! He's so excited he can barely keep it together.]

You mean you're an actual prehistoric human?! From the dawn of human junk?!

[If he seems eager to believe Guy's story it's just because absolutely nothing from his home precludes any of it being true.]

Tell. Me. Everything!

That shovel has its uses. Just not here. It's all about context.

For example, my sword's great for cutting down monsters, but it wouldn't be much help for farm work.

Hey!

[Gus. Gus is who doesn't appreciate it, which has a lot to do with the fact that he didn't see it coming. He drops the shovel on the plant, which wiggles and snarls in an angry manner.

Then he looks up and starts.]

Owl Lady?!

[A thousand questions flash through his mind, but the one that comes out first is:]

You know I can fly myself, right?!

But it's still exasperation.]

["The dawn of human junk" nets a laugh out of him. He hasn't laughed much lately. It feels good to. It's also refreshing to see someone excited to meet him and wanting to know things instead of acting like he's a primitive. He'd had good friends in the old world who didn't do that to him but also ran into some nasty people who had.]

From the dawn of human junk. Just dancing around the junk in the morning dew.

[But there's a more pressing matter at hand.]

How about before I tell you lots of things, including about our situation and about being a thing I learned about called a fossil, we get you taken care of first.

[He looks around, spots what he's looking for, and points across the street. It's a street with lots of shops so this makes this easier.]

There's a place over there to buy clothes. You can pick some out and I can pay for them and there's probably a place in there for you to change. Then when you're dry, if you're hungry, I can get you something to eat, and I can explain lots of things.

And then we can figure out what to do after that. We need to get you to somewhere safe with someone you're comfortable with taking care of you.

[Because he's like. Twelve.]

[He doesn't consider doing it himself even for a second because he's an absolute mess right now and he's largely unused to children. Just Eep's little sister and brother, Sandy and Thunk. And Thunk is... Thunk. He's very simple to deal with because he's not really the sharpest. And Sandy is easy to stay on the good side of. You just have to not directly challenge her with a direct stare, and sometimes toss a stick for her to fetch. She's still in the ankle-biter stage - with actual biting.]

[Otherwise, he hasn't dealt with any kids since he was one himself.]

[But the basics of survival, and some information, he can handle.]
badbutsadboy: (059)

[personal profile] badbutsadboy 2023-05-14 04:25 am (UTC)(link)
[Apparently, he maxed out his capacity to lie that day he joined the flyer derby team because he really hasn't gotten away with it since.]

Okay! Okay, a lot has happened. It's just some of it maybe possibly could potentially be something I didn't think through at the time but I learned my lesson! [He's been loosely holding Gus this whole time without really realizing, but the shrug he does finally breaks the hold, even if he doesn't move away.] And we can leave it at that?

[He says hopefully.]

[The problem with the shrug is he backs away so he's more visible and it also makes the sleeve of his short sleeve shirt rise up a little.]

[Revealing the big honking scar on his bicep. The bullet left scars for the entry and exit wound. The one that's visible, on his inner arm, is the worst one, the exit wound. Both because it was bigger and also because there's a long divot from the incision he got during the surgery to save his life. ]

[He's still not used to having those the way he's used to his other scars.]
paperclipsong: ([09])

[personal profile] paperclipsong 2023-05-14 04:28 am (UTC)(link)
Friend of mine told me that if you want to get rid of plants, you have to go for the roots! And my magic isn't going to work on these things!

[And he can't swing his Palisman staff hard enough to do much more than knock the plants back slightly. So that's a problem.]
paperclipsong: ([11])

[personal profile] paperclipsong 2023-05-14 04:59 am (UTC)(link)
[OK, he definitely pushed this a little too far. He steps back and puts up his hands to indicate that he's backing off.]

Hunter, Hunter it's OK! I'm sorry, I didn't mean to-

[And then he sees the scar on his bicep. It's big and it's gnarly and it causes Gus to trail off for just long enough to realize he's staring at it.

It looks like he was...impaled?

He wants to know what happened, of course he does, but it's pretty obvious that he's blaming himself for whatever it was.]

Hey...you don't need to tell me if you don't want.

[Stubborn Hunter is a lot more familiar than huggy Hunter, unfortunately. But he smiles at him anyway.]

But...if you do, I'm all ears. OK?
badbutsadboy: (050)

[personal profile] badbutsadboy 2023-05-14 05:13 am (UTC)(link)
[Gus recovers but Hunter is too perceptive. He notices the brief stare and wonders what he's - oh. Oh no.]

[And yet...Gus backs down. He doesn't react to the scar otherwise. Doesn't press. Doesn't act surprised or worried.]

[...And that only makes Hunter stop trying to cover everything up instead of wanting to hide it more. Gus makes room for things. He creates a space where it's safe to just...be.]

[And It's gotten easier now. He has friends here and some of them are a lot like Gus. So he's gotten better at talking about some things. And Gus is...Gus. Gus is the first person he ever trusted when he was deeply vulnerable and not had it blow up in his face. ]

[The Emperor's coven ate you alive if you showed vulnerability. And Belos...Belos was worse.]

It's not that it's that bad.

...Well, okay, that's not true. Some of it was really bad.

But I have people that care about me here so it helped since you and the others weren't here at first.

And... and he's gone. I've had time to... to get used to that.

[To heal, but it's not the way he'd word it.]

I tried to do some things on my own and got hurt pretty badly. My friends here saved me, just like you and Luz saved me from Kikimora taking me to un- to Belos.

And now I don't have to try doing things on my own. The Owl Lady took me in. I can see why Luz cares about her so much.

[He doesn't mention the alternate timeline bubble. That's still a little too painful to touch. What had been taken away from he and Eda had been so beautiful, so good. Even if it had been fake.]

[He doesn't know how to deal with the fact he misses an aunt he never had.]

I just didn't want you to worry since some bad things happened too. I really am okay.

And I wish we were with the others and able to go home but I am really glad to see you, too.
