TEST DRIVE MEME: MAY EDITION

TEST DRIVE MEME

A Confluence, capitalized, is the converging of one or more supernatural forces. Typically, a Confluence only occurs in one place at any given time. Typically.

These are not typical times.

Most of the Starfallen will arrive in Excelsior, Washington, slipping from the sky one by one, needing to be helped as they come floating down. To many citizens in Excelsior – individuals who are far from fond of metahumans – their arrival is a sign of bad things to come. It’s always a sign of bad things to come. This time, however, the bad things don’t come in the typical sequence. Instead, they’re dealing with a problem when the Starfallen begin to unwittingly arrive. What’s that problem? Plants with a rather problematic taste for flesh.

While Excelsior is hoping for spring to actually stick on the horizon, they’re warding off plants left and right. At least none of the plants seem to be able to spit fire – uh, yet?

In the midwestern part of the country, a huge barrage of rain has begun to settle over the land. Rain like this isn’t normal. Stormfronts usually keep moving forward, but this isn’t. And while rain isn’t a bad thing, this rain … is a deluge. A flood upon floods. Some Starfallen individuals will be showing up in the middle of this, arriving in both Little Love and Central City. Hope they can keep their heads above water!

Making matters worse is that everything seems a bit – planned? No, that’s not the right word. Like it’s all happened before. Or happening again. People all over are definitely noticing a strange uptick in déjà vu. Most worrying is how it seems to be happening everywhere.

EXCELSIOR

Ah, Excelsior – the city that doesn’t ask “why” something should be explored, but how quickly it can be explored. If only someone there had developed a swift measure to deal with a sudden influx of killer plants! The good news is that these plants haven’t killed anyone – not yet, anyway – but there is all the time in the world for that to change.

As the Starfallen arrive, they’re unlikely to notice the plants, and instead will see technological marvels all around them. Although Excelsior isn’t fond of Starfallen, they like the idea of welcoming them and getting them the hell out as quickly as possible. This philosophy results in all of the Starfallen being guided down to the ground, with further instructions awaiting them once they’re on two feet. (Or four. No one’s judging!) But once they land, they’re likely to notice that things aren’t the way they’re meant to be.

After all, someone in Excelsior failed to ask “why it’s bad to create an incredibly unlikely strain of plants that is genetically inspired by snapdragons, the flowers from those plumber games, and piranhas,” and instead went ahead with “how quickly can I do it?” Their experiment proved to be far too successful, aided by cutting-edge bioengineering technology.

Even though all Starfallen are encouraged to depart for the Midwest after they receive their teleportation devices, it’s apparent that the people of Excelsior need help. Right now, their chilly reception can easily be written off as a symptom of what’s happening. Dealing with newcomers at a time like this? Preposterous! People are injured from wild, flesh-eating plants. Obviously!

So, kind Starfallen – whether you’ve just arrived or came by when you heard word of the Confluence of trouble – will you give these dour folk the hand they so desperately need?

THE MIDWEST

Elsewhere, both Little Love and Central City are experiencing a flood of problems. Most of the problems are the result of the flood. While Little Love is known to be the quieter of the cities in this Confluence-ridden world, it finds itself dealing with a torrential downpour that it’s never seen before. Meteorologists quickly note that this is unnatural. All the way from Kansas to Illinois to Michigan there is rain, rain for as far as the eye can see. Flood warnings have no end in sight, and the people in these cities have asked for help from outside. If this rain doesn’t stop, all summer crops will be at risk!

The source of these problems? A Confluence. More specifically: a five-year-old girl who was born in Little Love just got news that her father died in an accident. Combine that with the incoming Confluence and the girl unwittingly unleashed her sadness upon the land.

Anyone investigating would learn that the rain began in Little Love, right before it began to spread upward and outward from the little town. Soon, Kansas, and then the entire Midwest, would feel the impact of her grief. Even when she sleeps, it doesn’t go away – her pain is a constant, after all. Finding her is key. No one can truly prevent a child’s grief, but perhaps they can help her realize her impact on the world and get her newly-arrived power under control.

DIADEM HOTEL
Whether you’ve gone to investigate the rather moist trouble or you’re just looking for some shut-eye, you’ve got a place that’s waiting for you. Need to clean up some plant-induced wounds? It’s time to hit the LUXURY HOTEL to ease any concerns.

The DIADEM HOTEL is usually reserved for the obscenely wealthy. Its rooms are enormous, the beds quite literally enchanted to offer the perfect night's sleep, and the food would usually cost your life savings for just a small taste. But given the circumstances, the Guilds feel its the least they can do to aid your transition into this world. EVERYTHING is complimentary, and everyone gets an ALLIANCE CREDIT CARD to spend on entertainment, clothing, and whatever other necessities they might need. The cards have an obscenely high limit and there doesn't seem to be an expectation for you to pay it back... though if they catch you abusing it, their accountant will be coming for your head.

There's a shopping center immediately across the street. It has an impressive array of outlet shops that cater to your every need. Food, clothing... and swords? If you can think of it, it's for sale. Although anything clearly supernatural or metahuman seems to be at a minimum and offered under the table. You can grab clothing made to withstand any superpower and a surprisingly mediocre Taco Bell order while you're at it. There's a Super Cinema in the shopping complex across the street that's showing a film called BARKS OF THE DEAD, a story about a zombified dog who protects a small family during the zombie apocalypse. Despite its taste for other dogs’ brains, this dog is fiercely loyal and will do anything for its owners.

EVERYWHERE: DÉJÀ VU
Less obvious and more innocuous are the strange stints of déjà vu all over. At first, it might seem like it’s a familiar thing you’ve seen before, but then you’re certain that you’ve ordered those chicken tenders before. Wait, you haven’t even been to this city before, much less this restaurant.

The feeling of déjà vu isn’t just that. Whole days will begin to feel like they’re repeating – surely they’ve solved that rain problem? Or the plant problem? Didn’t you hear that it happened?

Anyone keen to take notes might want to – assuming you haven’t just gotten that you did and they’ve been lost to time.

CLIFF NOTES.

➢ New arrivals will be appearing in Excelsior, Little Love, or Central City – with the bulk of them arriving in Excelsior. Their arrival will be expected and handled by a number of odd pieces of technology that help them as they fall from the sky itself. None of the locals will be happy to see the arrivals, but they’ll be so frazzled that they won’t be able to give them their usual chilly welcome. Vicious plants are on the loose and it’s not a meta’s fault. This might be meaningless to newcomers, but anyone who’s old hat at this will know that Excelsior can cause its own problems just fine, thank you.

➢ Arrivals who land in Little Love or Central City will arrive to a lot of rain. This much rainfall can impact the climate, daily life, crops – you name it. Arrivals will also be very, very soggy. If they’d like, they can ignore the trouble in favor of getting answers or heading to the hotel. No one’s obligated to lend a hand.

Current Players are welcome to treat this as a bonus event. These events are canonically happening within the game but can be largely ignored if you'd prefer to use the month for personal plots. You can tag into the TDM, reference these prompts in network posts, or use them in your own logs.

➢ As for the time stuff, feel free to treat it as a wobbly time event! Mess with memories, get a character caught in the same day, or even just make someone feel like they’ve suddenly acquired precognition as a power. The sky’s the limit!

WILDCARD.
Metaheroes takes inspiration from all walks of comics. Take a look at the CITIES to get an idea as to what day to day life is like in the other cities. Perhaps you've encountered a supervillain (or hero) who needs to be thwarted, or a metahuman with unusual powers creating bizarre effects.

[ Being out in public and not being recognised is an interesting experience for Tony. The barista had asked for his name for his coffee order and it had taken him a moment to realise that he was the one being addressed. But now he's used to it, it's actually kind of nice to be able to just hang out without being bothered by anyone.

He's at a bistro-style table with a view to the door, one leg crossed over the other, idly surfing the city's answer to social media. Theo's just another face in the crowd right now, but he knows the signs of someone trying to figure out how to talk to him and glances up to make encouraging eye contact.

Hey. Are you my Fiendishly Handsome one o'clock?

[ It's a crappy game Stephen thinks but doesn't say. They both know that and they both dealt in and they both keep raising the stakes.

Nobody's luck holds forever.

The clarity in Tony's gaze when he turns lets Stephen know he already took the note. He's not glad about it exactly, but it'll at least make things easier for the next ten minutes - or however long it takes for Tony to feel equipped to be left alone with his new reality. With a pinch at the corner of his mouth, discontent condensed into one small tell, he allows the page to turn. ]

How much do you know?

[ What basics are the welcome wagon handing out these days? It's been a long time since Stephen was aboard. ]

One minute I was in New York. Then I was here. Something about a rift in space and time -- which, I kind of thought you had that handled. [ A pointed glance over at Stephen. At least he's warming back up to riffing off him, settling back into a kind of normal like someone easing off a leg cramp. One thing about being a futurist, you've got to keep moving. ]

There are a lot of superheroes here. We're all supposed to pick a team -- and again, thought we had that handled the first time.

[ He's less thrilled about enforced registration these days. Tony wanders back over to the desk and starts looking around again, reaching out to pick up what he assumes is a paperweight, rolling it between his palms while he talks. ]

Oh and you're basically married to me. Or, the other me.

[ The mood whiplash sure is something. Tony shakes off horror like a dog fresh out of a pond and he makes damn sure to catch Stephen in the spray.

The face he makes is immediate and inevitable, brow furrowing and mouth twisting into a wry grimace, stakes suddenly so comparatively low that he doesn't bother to hide the way that verbal adventure to Spare Me town trips him up. ]

Can we do one thing at a time?

[ Surprisingly he'd rather not be arguing his case for being Not Remotely Married to Tony Stark, to Tony Stark, while also trying to run through the itemised list of very serious details about their current situation— all about five minutes after telling him he's going to die. ]

[Why buy weapons when you could manufacture far superior ones yourself? Donnie had never set foot in the store himself but he doubts that it'd sell anything relatively interesting if it was 1) commercialized and 2) sold out in public.

In his usual 'incognito', which means a purple hoodie pulled over his head because that usually does the trick of avoiding most second glances maybe, the turtle teen's on his phone, thumbing through screens when he passes the storefront. The sound has him stop abruptly, and not a moment too soon as a split-second after, something goes whizzing right past his face.

[ it’s a good question. thanks to the memories he siphoned from that other self, with that touch to the temple where an infinity stone should have been, vision is aware he’s looking at a dead man. in those terrible final hours at westview he made a lackluster attempt internally to settle all the facts of his history—because that being with the white chassis had been vision, but so too had he been, so he remains—but in the end everything had been shuttled away as lesser priority. avengers were dead, had been dead; tony stark was dead; he himself was dead. but his wife was alive. and she needed him.

wanda isn’t here. tony stark is. in the absence of a solid truth to stand on, vision falls back on routine.
]

... a bioengineering accident has resulted in this city being besieged by hostile sentient plants. They’re causing extensive property damage, and while I don’t have confirmation on their digestive habits, it seems as though they at least ... bite. I’m sending my best estimate of where they’re concentrated—

[ wait. can he still send things to the suit? he could before he died. he isn’t quite what he was when he died. he’s—well, he can try.

when the connection greenlights something flickers helplessly across his expression. vision’s sitreps, when they upload, are always thorough.

[ he hadn’t been talking to anyone in particular, and he’d been so fixated on triangulating on the sound, the subtle pitches of grief in the rain, that he actually startles when billy addresses him. ]

Ah, sorry—

[ the young man, at a glance, isn’t immediately familiar. but the mind stone hums in recognition. vision can’t fully place that sensation, except for where it recalls his wife’s elegant and hovering hand, the way her magic commingled so effortlessly with the power concentrated in the center of his forehead—and that was before she remade him completely.

he doesn’t fully know what kind of mark her act of creation may have left on him, and anyway wanda hadn’t understood her magic either, so there’s no ready explanation for this familiarity. he looks billy over at length. when no further recognition comes he realizes sheepishly he has yet to answer the question.
]

... no. Not in here. [ he juts his head towards the window. ] It’s a child. In one of the zones that I believe has already been evacuated. I don’t know how she was missed.

[ she might have missed the evac call. vision glances back outside, calculates, during which time in a flash of static fuzz he dispenses with his human face: the deep fruit color of the chassis, the coloration of the suit that isn’t fully a suit, the flow of the cape. ]

I can retrieve her unassisted. You should rest if you can.

Carol, I'm new here too. Just trying to figure out, well, anything out really... [It's a chuckle of frustration when she says it, this is like the third time in the last year that she's ended up in a different dimension, or maybe just a different timeline, as it's yet unclear to her. But man, she's kind of over this being 'her thing']

The plants were weird for sure, but I was once stuck in an alternate dimension where my friend who is a plant got changed into a giant carrot, so I'm a little used to weird plants, although the attacking bit was new.

[Bringing up that universe and the name Natalie gets her thinking of Natasha though, which she guesses if she squints a little bit and tilts her head they kind of look simpler, although this women is much more petite.]

[The clerk would be yelling if he wasn't cowering, too shocked to catch his breath. Still holding the grappling gun, Avi recovers far more quickly, bright-eyed interest replacing wide-eyed surprise. His gaze follows the line of the taut wire, noticing Donatello only in the periphery: someone taller than him (disgusting), dressed in purple (no opinion), currently unskewered (a nebulous positive). The hook, now lodged into an oversized rotating pretzel display, fails to come free after an experimental tug, and he frowns, looking back down at the gun in his hands. There's a bright red button just above the trigger, so he presses it—

—only to be yanked off his feet with an undignified yelp as the wire retracts at full speed, pulling him through the broken window and straight at Donatello.]

[Donnie's still cycling through his options for a valid follow-up response, his eyes tracing the line as he has to wonder just what all it had snagged upon. His mistake, he realizes belatedly, as he hears a familiar sound, turning only to see the culprit that had nearly taken off his head (an exaggeration, surely) suddenly flying right at him.

It's impressive, the retraction speed- or perhaps it's just due to the kobold's light size. Regardless, precious seconds have been wasted and inevitably Donnie's slammed into by the flying Starfallen, dragged along for the ride, though not without a shout in protest.

[Gus is on a fact-finding mission today. And this...witch? Demon? Neither? Is going to help.

See, Gus is usually pretty confident in human kitchens. He doesn't have eyeballs or apple blood, but olives usually substitute pretty well even though you lose the crunch of the lens (you aren't supposed to eat the pit apparently), and while there's no substitute for proper apple blood, rice vinegar, cider, and the sauce secreted by something called an "oyster" makes the closest approximation to the tang.

But the world of human food is just too big to be known through one small suburban kitchen and it's so rare that a witch in the human realm gets to branch out. So Gus is finishing up a thing called a "chimichanga" which is way too filling, is about the size and texture of a fried salamander tongue but doesn't taste at ALL the same, and somehow not sitting well in a stomach that's used to digesting fairy pie and slug meat.

That was one item on a menu that is now looking impossibly huge compared to Gus's tiny gullet.

And now a guy just ordered everything on it. This is an opportunity so golden that if it were actual gold Gus would need sunglasses to look directly at it. He sidles up to Avi's booth all casual like, except for the extremely intent look on his face.]

For the very brief moment he allows the contact, a myriad of emotions flicker across his face. Wistfulness. Longing. Grief.

Before he side-steps out of the way and shuts down his expression so completely that it's totally not suspicious. Nothing to see here, officer.
