TEST DRIVE MEME: MAY EDITION

TEST DRIVE MEME

A Confluence, capitalized, is the converging of one or more supernatural forces. Typically, a Confluence only occurs in one place at any given time. Typically.

These are not typical times.

Most of the Starfallen will arrive in Excelsior, Washington, slipping from the sky one by one, needing to be helped as they come floating down. To many citizens in Excelsior – individuals who are far from fond of metahumans – their arrival is a sign of bad things to come. It’s always a sign of bad things to come. This time, however, the bad things don’t come in the typical sequence. Instead, they’re dealing with a problem when the Starfallen begin to unwittingly arrive. What’s that problem? Plants with a rather problematic taste for flesh.

While Excelsior is hoping for spring to actually stick on the horizon, they’re warding off plants left and right. At least none of the plants seem to be able to spit fire – uh, yet?

In the midwestern part of the country, a huge barrage of rain has begun to settle over the land. Rain like this isn’t normal. Stormfronts usually keep moving forward, but this isn’t. And while rain isn’t a bad thing, this rain … is a deluge. A flood upon floods. Some Starfallen individuals will be showing up in the middle of this, arriving in both Little Love and Central City. Hope they can keep their heads above water!

Making matters worse is that everything seems a bit – planned? No, that’s not the right word. Like it’s all happened before. Or happening again. People all over are definitely noticing a strange uptick in déjà vu. Most worrying is how it seems to be happening everywhere.

EXCELSIOR

Ah, Excelsior – the city that doesn’t ask “why” something should be explored, but how quickly it can be explored. If only someone there had developed a swift measure to deal with a sudden influx of killer plants! The good news is that these plants haven’t killed anyone – not yet, anyway – but there is all the time in the world for that to change.

As the Starfallen arrive, they’re unlikely to notice the plants, and instead will see technological marvels all around them. Although Excelsior isn’t fond of Starfallen, they like the idea of welcoming them and getting them the hell out as quickly as possible. This philosophy results in all of the Starfallen being guided down to the ground, with further instructions awaiting them once they’re on two feet. (Or four. No one’s judging!) But once they land, they’re likely to notice that things aren’t the way they’re meant to be.

After all, someone in Excelsior failed to ask “why it’s bad to create an incredibly unlikely strain of plants that is genetically inspired by snapdragons, the flowers from those plumber games, and piranhas,” and instead went ahead with “how quickly can I do it?” Their experiment proved to be far too successful, aided by cutting-edge bioengineering technology.

Even though all Starfallen are encouraged to depart for the Midwest after they receive their teleportation devices, it’s apparent that the people of Excelsior need help. Right now, their chilly reception can easily be written off as a symptom of what’s happening. Dealing with newcomers at a time like this? Preposterous! People are injured from wild, flesh-eating plants. Obviously!

So, kind Starfallen – whether you’ve just arrived or came by when you heard word of the Confluence of trouble – will you give these dour folk the hand they so desperately need?

THE MIDWEST

Elsewhere, both Little Love and Central City are experiencing a flood of problems. Most of the problems are the result of the flood. While Little Love is known to be the quieter of the cities in this Confluence-ridden world, it finds itself dealing with a torrential downpour that it’s never seen before. Meteorologists quickly note that this is unnatural. All the way from Kansas to Illinois to Michigan there is rain, rain for as far as the eye can see. Flood warnings have no end in sight, and the people in these cities have asked for help from outside. If this rain doesn’t stop, all summer crops will be at risk!

The source of these problems? A Confluence. More specifically: a five-year-old girl who was born in Little Love just got news that her father died in an accident. Combine that with the incoming Confluence and the girl unwittingly unleashed her sadness upon the land.

Anyone investigating would learn that the rain began in Little Love, right before it began to spread upward and outward from the little town. Soon, Kansas, and then the entire Midwest, would feel the impact of her grief. Even when she sleeps, it doesn’t go away – her pain is a constant, after all. Finding her is key. No one can truly prevent a child’s grief, but perhaps they can help her realize her impact on the world and get her newly-arrived power under control.

DIADEM HOTEL
Whether you’ve gone to investigate the rather moist trouble or you’re just looking for some shut-eye, you’ve got a place that’s waiting for you. Need to clean up some plant-induced wounds? It’s time to hit the LUXURY HOTEL to ease any concerns.

The DIADEM HOTEL is usually reserved for the obscenely wealthy. Its rooms are enormous, the beds quite literally enchanted to offer the perfect night's sleep, and the food would usually cost your life savings for just a small taste. But given the circumstances, the Guilds feel its the least they can do to aid your transition into this world. EVERYTHING is complimentary, and everyone gets an ALLIANCE CREDIT CARD to spend on entertainment, clothing, and whatever other necessities they might need. The cards have an obscenely high limit and there doesn't seem to be an expectation for you to pay it back... though if they catch you abusing it, their accountant will be coming for your head.

There's a shopping center immediately across the street. It has an impressive array of outlet shops that cater to your every need. Food, clothing... and swords? If you can think of it, it's for sale. Although anything clearly supernatural or metahuman seems to be at a minimum and offered under the table. You can grab clothing made to withstand any superpower and a surprisingly mediocre Taco Bell order while you're at it. There's a Super Cinema in the shopping complex across the street that's showing a film called BARKS OF THE DEAD, a story about a zombified dog who protects a small family during the zombie apocalypse. Despite its taste for other dogs’ brains, this dog is fiercely loyal and will do anything for its owners.

EVERYWHERE: DÉJÀ VU
Less obvious and more innocuous are the strange stints of déjà vu all over. At first, it might seem like it’s a familiar thing you’ve seen before, but then you’re certain that you’ve ordered those chicken tenders before. Wait, you haven’t even been to this city before, much less this restaurant.

The feeling of déjà vu isn’t just that. Whole days will begin to feel like they’re repeating – surely they’ve solved that rain problem? Or the plant problem? Didn’t you hear that it happened?

Anyone keen to take notes might want to – assuming you haven’t just gotten that you did and they’ve been lost to time.

CLIFF NOTES.

➢ New arrivals will be appearing in Excelsior, Little Love, or Central City – with the bulk of them arriving in Excelsior. Their arrival will be expected and handled by a number of odd pieces of technology that help them as they fall from the sky itself. None of the locals will be happy to see the arrivals, but they’ll be so frazzled that they won’t be able to give them their usual chilly welcome. Vicious plants are on the loose and it’s not a meta’s fault. This might be meaningless to newcomers, but anyone who’s old hat at this will know that Excelsior can cause its own problems just fine, thank you.

➢ Arrivals who land in Little Love or Central City will arrive to a lot of rain. This much rainfall can impact the climate, daily life, crops – you name it. Arrivals will also be very, very soggy. If they’d like, they can ignore the trouble in favor of getting answers or heading to the hotel. No one’s obligated to lend a hand.

Current Players are welcome to treat this as a bonus event. These events are canonically happening within the game but can be largely ignored if you'd prefer to use the month for personal plots. You can tag into the TDM, reference these prompts in network posts, or use them in your own logs.

➢ As for the time stuff, feel free to treat it as a wobbly time event! Mess with memories, get a character caught in the same day, or even just make someone feel like they’ve suddenly acquired precognition as a power. The sky’s the limit!

WILDCARD.
Metaheroes takes inspiration from all walks of comics. Take a look at the CITIES to get an idea as to what day to day life is like in the other cities. Perhaps you've encountered a supervillain (or hero) who needs to be thwarted, or a metahuman with unusual powers creating bizarre effects.

Just dropped in today, literally.

[Carol shrugs a little bit at the bad joke and glances down at her shopping bags before back up at Natasha.]

Like really, my Natasha? The one who was there when Stephen and I got body swapped?

[She asks after straining her mind to come up with the last time she's actually seen Natasha in her mind -- she probably could do a better job with that in the future and it's a note.]

I'm just asking because the last couple universes I was in one you were a space pirate named Widower and the other you were dead but I met your daughter you'd had with Clint... [She cuts off talking because she realizes this may be potentially alienating if this is indeed a different universe Natasha and well, she really should stop rambling.]

Nope. Around my age or older. We're all over the timeline and multiverse.

[personal profile] lightmyself 2023-06-25 08:48 pm (UTC)(link)
What? [Excuse him, he needs a minute to process this.]

Yeah, that's too much for me. Adult Robin is my limit. Tell me he's not being Robin anymore.
chewiedout: (coffee fixes things)

[personal profile] chewiedout 2023-06-25 08:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, you know, it's happened a few times too many to me and I know it can be stressful. Always wishing it was just a bad dream. People who look like your friends end up being your mortal enemies, stuff like that.

[She shrugs and when the bartender brings her her glass she spins it in her hands a couple of times before raising it with a nod to Natalie like a half intended cheers before taking a sip of it.]

Could be worse, I suppose, could be stuck in a time loop or something. At least this place has nice shops and food. Someone said something about getting pulled in because we're heroes? Which is mildly concerning why a single place needs so many...

[That's the big concern in the back of Carol's mind through all this, if this location keeps pulling alternate people what exactly is going on.]

From what I understand, nope. He's using something else. Don't know what though. He's been the most squirrelly out of all of us. Apparently, where he's from, his relationship with B is hell.

( last time he fell asleep in the vicinity of a dick grayson, he'd almost had dicks drawn on his face. if this dick was a little older, or a little less new, jason would be returning the favor. luckily, he isn't, and so jason sticks to scrawling the safehouse address towards the inside of his elbow--high enough most people won't find it, also high enough that when jason's fingers brush his sleeve to plant the tracker, it's not suspicious. )

I'd put it at 60/40. Enough of a chance to keep an eye out for trouble anyway.

( jason never stayed there. jason also shredded his credit card the moment he was out of sight of the welcome committee. but jason may also be just a little more paranoid than dick. so. )

Safehouse has shelf stable food in the kitchen, too. Three days worth for me, so--probably a week's worth for a scrawny runt like you. ( so tiny. ) There's a burner phone in the kitchen drawer to the left of the sink.

[Just when Duke thought there was nothing else that could throw him. Damian having that bad of a relationship with Bruce...he can't even imagine it. Damian obviously adores Bruce and looks up to him and Bruce...he cares a lot about all of his kids. He can't imagine what would cause it all to go that bad.]

Oh no... [He has a realization.] Is he from the evil universe? There's always one of those in movies, right? Did he get the Evil Batman?
robintohood: ([RH] Haven't lost the touch)

[personal profile] robintohood 2023-06-25 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Given that the Confluence pulls in all kinds of people, that's entirely possible.

So were you one of the birds before all this?

[Jason gestures at Duke's entire getup]

Yellow doesn't exactly scream nocturnal.
lightmyself: (113)

[personal profile] lightmyself 2023-06-25 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
[There's an awkward sort of pride to that.]

You could call us self-proclaimed Birds at the time. There was a lot going on. I was never Robin officially. But B took me in after and he's been training me.
robintohood: ([RH] You and your toys)

[personal profile] robintohood 2023-06-25 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
[Huh. It wasn't the answer Jason expected given some of similarities to how Dick, him, and Tim(s) came under Bruce's wing. There's a strange and awkward bit of pride Jason feels hearing that the Robin legacy has left an impact on Gotham separate from Batman's legacy]

Must've done something really special to have him do that. That's how it went with the rest of us.
lightmyself: (050)

[personal profile] lightmyself 2023-06-25 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
[That makes him think of what Luke said, about Bruce only picking people he believes in. He grins a little.]

I'd like to think so. When everyone else decided to stop...I knew I couldn't. This is what I'm meant to do. I'd be doing it without B, but it means a lot that he believes in me.
robintohood: ([RH] Got it?)

[personal profile] robintohood 2023-06-25 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Better you got some training than letting you go be alone. That's another thing we seem to all have in common.

[As much as Jason doesn't like that there are this many Robins, the alternative options weren't really better. Jason knows he would've become another two-bit goon like his biological father if he hadn't become Robin]

Sounds like the manor's been getting crowded.
lightmyself: (003)

[personal profile] lightmyself 2023-06-25 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Feels like it sometimes. [Duke laughs.]

Holidays are always busy. It's just me and Robin living there with B and A, though. Everyone else has their own place.
robintohood: ([RH] First mistake)

[personal profile] robintohood 2023-06-25 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)

Let me guess. The me you know came back to the family.

[personal profile] lightmyself 2023-06-25 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
[Oh right. That reminds him that this Jason doesn't have the bat on his chest and that says... Huh.]

Yeah, he did. He's been back a while. Before I joined up.

[He acts like he's too cool for them and Only Doing It For The Social Commentary sometimes, but you know, it's Jason.]

I'm guessing it hasn't happened in your world. [Yet. Hopefully "yet."]
robintohood: ([RH] Got it?)

[personal profile] robintohood 2023-06-25 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
[Jason scoffs]

Yeah. I had only been back in Gotham for about a year before the Confluence snatched me up, And now it's been over a year since I was on this version of Earth. Rook got dropped off here at the same time as me. Big Bird, older me, and Robin all showed up afterwards. Robin's the newest addition. He's only been here since April.

I miss a lot of people, but yeah. [ Bucky nods. He compartmentalizes, like he's been taught. So the part of him that misses things is locked away, a lot of the time. And in a way that means he misses them more.

When she says her name, his mouth turns. What a coincidence. But none of that is her fault. ]

[Oh, that sounds like he was still very much in the middle of his "aggressive disagreement" with Bruce, as Alfred might say.]

Sounds like everyone has been dealing with it as best they can. I want to help. You may not know me, I may not even exist in your world, but I signed up for this. If you need it, I'll be there.

[Sure, maybe they don't know it yet, but this is his family.]

However, you can visit your reality for a limited amount of time.

[ He still doesn't understand half of what is going on, and that's a generous estimate. But there was something almost therapeutic about spending the past several hours fighting a street-level enemy with street-level stakes. No cause or room for self-doubt or recriminations, just action and reaction, helping to save a city that has treated him with blanket indifference. The absence of a hero's reception brings a wave of relief, the entire afternoon a reprieve from his day to day reality, but it can't last forever.

The setting sun casts a dim orange aura across the futuristic skyline as Steve walks up to the Diadem Hotel. He pauses just inside the lobby as his eyes adjust to the artificial lighting. In the back of his mind, Steve is formulating a tentative plan of action for finding his way back home until his gaze settles on an unmistakable silhouette. He makes a beeline through the lobby and is dropping into the seat beside her within seconds.

It's not great for the mission, the two of them being stuck here together, but her presence is a gift horse Steve won't look in the mouth just yet. They'll get further together than alone. After everything that has happened, he still has to believe that.

Her immediate dismissal earns a low, self-deprecating chuckle from Steve. ]
Sick of me already? That must be a new record.

[ For ten straight minutes after landing in a botanical warzone, Steve barks into his earpiece and hopes for a response. He is answered with radio silence. And then, suddenly, he can hear frantic cursing followed by a technical whirring that he would recognize anywhere. ]

Oh, thank God. [ If he sounds breathless, it's because he is simultaneously fighting off a very aggressive mass of thorn-covered vines. Fortunately, the edge of his shield slices cleanly through them. Unfortunately, he has but one shield and the vines seem to be multiplying faster than he can cut through. In terms of priority, the vines can wait. ] Please tell me you have eyes on the rest of the team.

Gemini de Mille | DC Comics

[personal profile] stretchy_girl 2023-06-26 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
Excelsior- Arrival
[The painting's heavy in her arms, a stunning Monet depicting Waterlilies, just stolen from the Metropolitan Museum in New York and now bound for her penthouse wall. Or at least it would be, as abruptly the painting is gone and she's falling from a great height, a city below her and growing larger by the second. It's no effort for a pair of leathery wings to sprout from her back, but before she can unfurl them something grabs her and she curses, writhing in mid-air to try and see what's attacked her. Some kind of drone?]

Get off me you stupid...

[She growls, bringing her arms up to crush the damn thing. Unfortunately her struggle to extricate herself means she still hasn't unfurled those wings and a moment later she smacks into a skyscraper, bounces off and then careens hard into the ground.

For a moment she lies there, the ground cracked by her fall, her leg twisted at an unnatural angle beneath her and if you look closely it seems her back's been oddly deformed by the impact.]

Killer Plants

[Not long after Gemini's started to explore this strange new city, having adopted clothing that matches the locals, wandering the sidewalks and taking things in. A technological marvel and veritable paradise compared to the mean streets of Bludhaven and perhaps that's why she doesn't really feel at home. At least she goes to explore a set of odd-looking plants and while she's idly thumbing a flower something sharp chomps onto her shoulder, now that's more like home.]

Really?

[She glares at the thing, then down at the teeth embedded in her shoulder. Well that's annoying.]

Central City

[Gemini's nothing if not restless and with a teleportation device it's not long before she sets out to explore this new world. As she ports in the torrential rain pouring down has her wrinkling her nose in distaste and, once she's checked for onlookers, a large umbrella sprouts up from her hand. Much better.

It's a change to be able to walk a city streets without attracting any trouble with law enforcement. But here she has yet to commit any crimes and gain a record, that'll change. Theft, murder, extortion, which to commit first...?]

Diadem Hotel

[A taxi pulls out of the main entrance and out gets a beautiful blonde in an expensive black dress. Sweeping up the steps with the haughty expression of one who had a lot of money and no regard for those without it, she stops at the receptionist's desk with a brusque.]

I'll take your best suite.

[If it turns out the card can't pay for it then she'll simply steal someone's that can. Not long after she might be seen exploring the hotel's ballroom and restaurant, still the stunningly attractive blonde and every bit as superior.]

["Aggressive disagreement" is certainly one way to describe Jason's crime lord phase. Jason looks at Duke, considering. He still doesn't consider himself as having returned to the family even though he's been getting reacquainted with Dick and getting to know his other siblings for the past year. But he also has to admit that not everyone in the family is like Bruce. He doesn't have to fight everyone all the time]

We'll see how that goes.

[It's a neutral answer and leaves open to negative and positive interpretations]

We got a few recognizable heroes around too.
lightmyself: (108)

[personal profile] lightmyself 2023-06-26 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
[That sounds like a positive enough response to Duke. He knows how Jason can get and he hasn't run off, so it's all good in his opinion.]

How many? Is it the Justice League?
robintohood: ([RH] Got it?)

[personal profile] robintohood 2023-06-26 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
Nah. Not even close. Last I heard we got a Green Lantern, Kid Flash, and the Superboy who's teammates with older number 3. He's going by Guardian now though. There's a former Titan around but I'm pretty sure he's from before your time. Then there's someone else who might be Kryptonian but I've only talked to her once so far. And then we also got a civilian who's from a future version of Gotham.

For a while we also had Wonder Woman and the other Superboy.

[Jason's tone then becomes more serious]

The clown might still be around too.
