TEST DRIVE MEME: MAY EDITION

TEST DRIVE MEME

A Confluence, capitalized, is the converging of one or more supernatural forces. Typically, a Confluence only occurs in one place at any given time. Typically.

These are not typical times.

Most of the Starfallen will arrive in Excelsior, Washington, slipping from the sky one by one, needing to be helped as they come floating down. To many citizens in Excelsior – individuals who are far from fond of metahumans – their arrival is a sign of bad things to come. It’s always a sign of bad things to come. This time, however, the bad things don’t come in the typical sequence. Instead, they’re dealing with a problem when the Starfallen begin to unwittingly arrive. What’s that problem? Plants with a rather problematic taste for flesh.

While Excelsior is hoping for spring to actually stick on the horizon, they’re warding off plants left and right. At least none of the plants seem to be able to spit fire – uh, yet?

In the midwestern part of the country, a huge barrage of rain has begun to settle over the land. Rain like this isn’t normal. Stormfronts usually keep moving forward, but this isn’t. And while rain isn’t a bad thing, this rain … is a deluge. A flood upon floods. Some Starfallen individuals will be showing up in the middle of this, arriving in both Little Love and Central City. Hope they can keep their heads above water!

Making matters worse is that everything seems a bit – planned? No, that’s not the right word. Like it’s all happened before. Or happening again. People all over are definitely noticing a strange uptick in déjà vu. Most worrying is how it seems to be happening everywhere.

EXCELSIOR

Ah, Excelsior – the city that doesn’t ask “why” something should be explored, but how quickly it can be explored. If only someone there had developed a swift measure to deal with a sudden influx of killer plants! The good news is that these plants haven’t killed anyone – not yet, anyway – but there is all the time in the world for that to change.

As the Starfallen arrive, they’re unlikely to notice the plants, and instead will see technological marvels all around them. Although Excelsior isn’t fond of Starfallen, they like the idea of welcoming them and getting them the hell out as quickly as possible. This philosophy results in all of the Starfallen being guided down to the ground, with further instructions awaiting them once they’re on two feet. (Or four. No one’s judging!) But once they land, they’re likely to notice that things aren’t the way they’re meant to be.

After all, someone in Excelsior failed to ask “why it’s bad to create an incredibly unlikely strain of plants that is genetically inspired by snapdragons, the flowers from those plumber games, and piranhas,” and instead went ahead with “how quickly can I do it?” Their experiment proved to be far too successful, aided by cutting-edge bioengineering technology.

Even though all Starfallen are encouraged to depart for the Midwest after they receive their teleportation devices, it’s apparent that the people of Excelsior need help. Right now, their chilly reception can easily be written off as a symptom of what’s happening. Dealing with newcomers at a time like this? Preposterous! People are injured from wild, flesh-eating plants. Obviously!

So, kind Starfallen – whether you’ve just arrived or came by when you heard word of the Confluence of trouble – will you give these dour folk the hand they so desperately need?

THE MIDWEST

Elsewhere, both Little Love and Central City are experiencing a flood of problems. Most of the problems are the result of the flood. While Little Love is known to be the quieter of the cities in this Confluence-ridden world, it finds itself dealing with a torrential downpour that it’s never seen before. Meteorologists quickly note that this is unnatural. All the way from Kansas to Illinois to Michigan there is rain, rain for as far as the eye can see. Flood warnings have no end in sight, and the people in these cities have asked for help from outside. If this rain doesn’t stop, all summer crops will be at risk!

The source of these problems? A Confluence. More specifically: a five-year-old girl who was born in Little Love just got news that her father died in an accident. Combine that with the incoming Confluence and the girl unwittingly unleashed her sadness upon the land.

Anyone investigating would learn that the rain began in Little Love, right before it began to spread upward and outward from the little town. Soon, Kansas, and then the entire Midwest, would feel the impact of her grief. Even when she sleeps, it doesn’t go away – her pain is a constant, after all. Finding her is key. No one can truly prevent a child’s grief, but perhaps they can help her realize her impact on the world and get her newly-arrived power under control.

DIADEM HOTEL
Whether you’ve gone to investigate the rather moist trouble or you’re just looking for some shut-eye, you’ve got a place that’s waiting for you. Need to clean up some plant-induced wounds? It’s time to hit the LUXURY HOTEL to ease any concerns.

The DIADEM HOTEL is usually reserved for the obscenely wealthy. Its rooms are enormous, the beds quite literally enchanted to offer the perfect night's sleep, and the food would usually cost your life savings for just a small taste. But given the circumstances, the Guilds feel its the least they can do to aid your transition into this world. EVERYTHING is complimentary, and everyone gets an ALLIANCE CREDIT CARD to spend on entertainment, clothing, and whatever other necessities they might need. The cards have an obscenely high limit and there doesn't seem to be an expectation for you to pay it back... though if they catch you abusing it, their accountant will be coming for your head.

There's a shopping center immediately across the street. It has an impressive array of outlet shops that cater to your every need. Food, clothing... and swords? If you can think of it, it's for sale. Although anything clearly supernatural or metahuman seems to be at a minimum and offered under the table. You can grab clothing made to withstand any superpower and a surprisingly mediocre Taco Bell order while you're at it. There's a Super Cinema in the shopping complex across the street that's showing a film called BARKS OF THE DEAD, a story about a zombified dog who protects a small family during the zombie apocalypse. Despite its taste for other dogs’ brains, this dog is fiercely loyal and will do anything for its owners.

EVERYWHERE: DÉJÀ VU
Less obvious and more innocuous are the strange stints of déjà vu all over. At first, it might seem like it’s a familiar thing you’ve seen before, but then you’re certain that you’ve ordered those chicken tenders before. Wait, you haven’t even been to this city before, much less this restaurant.

The feeling of déjà vu isn’t just that. Whole days will begin to feel like they’re repeating – surely they’ve solved that rain problem? Or the plant problem? Didn’t you hear that it happened?

Anyone keen to take notes might want to – assuming you haven’t just gotten that you did and they’ve been lost to time.

CLIFF NOTES.

➢ New arrivals will be appearing in Excelsior, Little Love, or Central City – with the bulk of them arriving in Excelsior. Their arrival will be expected and handled by a number of odd pieces of technology that help them as they fall from the sky itself. None of the locals will be happy to see the arrivals, but they’ll be so frazzled that they won’t be able to give them their usual chilly welcome. Vicious plants are on the loose and it’s not a meta’s fault. This might be meaningless to newcomers, but anyone who’s old hat at this will know that Excelsior can cause its own problems just fine, thank you.

➢ Arrivals who land in Little Love or Central City will arrive to a lot of rain. This much rainfall can impact the climate, daily life, crops – you name it. Arrivals will also be very, very soggy. If they’d like, they can ignore the trouble in favor of getting answers or heading to the hotel. No one’s obligated to lend a hand.

Current Players are welcome to treat this as a bonus event. These events are canonically happening within the game but can be largely ignored if you'd prefer to use the month for personal plots. You can tag into the TDM, reference these prompts in network posts, or use them in your own logs.

➢ As for the time stuff, feel free to treat it as a wobbly time event! Mess with memories, get a character caught in the same day, or even just make someone feel like they’ve suddenly acquired precognition as a power. The sky’s the limit!

WILDCARD.
Metaheroes takes inspiration from all walks of comics. Take a look at the CITIES to get an idea as to what day to day life is like in the other cities. Perhaps you've encountered a supervillain (or hero) who needs to be thwarted, or a metahuman with unusual powers creating bizarre effects.

Raine Whispers | The Owl House | new here

[personal profile] whistlestoptea 2023-05-04 06:57 pm (UTC)(link)
EXCELSIOR

[ Suddenly finding themselves in the sky and, rather gently, floating downwards is certainly not what Raine had planned today. As they approach the ground, they see tall, very boxy buildings, very different from Bonesborough.

Finally, they land between the strange houses, sunlight gleaming off many a glass surface.

And then, a thick branch of a plant shoots toward them, looking very much like it's going to eat them. Raine yelps and jumps out of the way. ]

Wherever it is that I've landed, there's no lack of carnivorous plants!

CENTRAL CITY

[ After the plants are somewhat dealt with, they're urged to go to a place called "The Midwest". Midwest of what? But Raine usually learns more by observation than anything, so they go with the flow, figuring at least they might find out more about their situation there.

Central City is not quite as... reflective as Excelsior, but still full of tall buildings and very sprawling.

Not that Raine gets much time to enjoy the sights, because there is rain falling.

For a moment, they panic, instinctively expecting it to burn them.

But it doesn't.

It's just cold and wet. They look up at the skies in wonder, remembering all they've heard about the human rain.

Of course, this rapidly ends with them getting completely drenched. ]

A-choo!

[ Cold seeps into their bones and they start shivering. ]

Central City

[personal profile] badbutsadboy 2023-05-04 07:33 pm (UTC)(link)
[Hunter spends a lot of time in Central nowadays. It's where some of his friends live and he's lucky enough, despite being unaligned and not having access to a teleporter anymore, to have a friend with teleportation powers who he can sometimes ask for rides.]

[He ducks inside a bodega the second it starts raining, partly on old instinct, but it's a good thing anyway, because he didn't think to bring an umbrella. He buys a cheap one there and leaves to continue on his way to visit Jason's safehouse, deciding to keep going on foot since it'll be hard to hold it while flying.]

[That's when he sees a familiar face across the street. His face brightens. He and Raine weren't ever particularly close. It would have been a terrible idea on Raine's part given their clandestine actions and Hunter's fervent loyalty to Belos. But still, any of the other members of the rebellion is a welcome sight. Hunter knows they can be trusted if they were willing to stand up to someone as awful and powerful as Belos.]

[So Raine will find an umbrella suddenly held over their head from behind, and someone catching up to their side. he's dressed like a human. His ears are hidden by a beanie hat and his eyes are hidden behind sunglasses, but the hair that's visible, including that forelock, are a familiar platinum blonde and that nose and tooth gap is pretty distinctive.]

[He looks confused.]

Why are you just standing in it? That's not much better an idea here than it is back home, just for completely opposite reasons. You're going to freeze.

[That voice is familiar, too.]

[personal profile] whistlestoptea 2023-05-04 07:46 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Raine blinks at the shadow of the umbrella over them, then turns and does a double take. ]

You're... the Golden Guard?

[ Very rarely have they seen the Golden Guard outside of their mask, but they do recognize his voice. ]

What are you doing here?

[ Well. They might also ask what they are doing here. Or where "here" even is. The human realm, that much is obvious. But Raine doesn't have much of an idea what the human realm looks like, beyond hearsay that goes around in the Boiling Isles, much of which might be untrue. ]
badbutsadboy: (067)

[personal profile] badbutsadboy 2023-05-04 08:07 pm (UTC)(link)
[He pulls a face at being called the Golden Guard. It's not like Raine to - oh no.]

Oh no.

This is one of those time thingies, isn't it.

[Eda'd been pulled from what seemed like slightly behind, it seemed like. Amity had been pulled from slightly ahead.]

[He doesn't know how risky it is to tell Raine he's not the Golden Guard now. He'd already told Amity to not tell him too much about his own future, worried that he'll change his behavior in a way that will harm her past. That it might even erase her from existence. Or keep the group from finding a way home to the Boiling Isles like she mentioned.]

[But Raine does know how to be discreet. And it'll be very hard to deal with each other if they still think Hunter is loyal to Belos.]

People can get pulled here from the same world but from different times. I'm probably from your future. One of my friends is here from even farther ahead than me. She knows things that haven't happened yet to me and my friends.

[He directs his gaze away.]

I'm not the Golden Guard anymore. I haven't been for a while. I know the truth. About Belos.
whistlestoptea: (sideeye)

[personal profile] whistlestoptea 2023-05-04 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh.

[ That... is a lot to take in at once. There's a pause as Raine awkwardly adjusts their glasses. ]

You've been here a while, haven't you? What is this place?
badbutsadboy: (065)

[personal profile] badbutsadboy 2023-05-04 08:36 pm (UTC)(link)
[Hunter nods.]

It's a version of the human realm that isn't the same one attached to the demon realm. Some of the humans have powers and magic here. The politics around it are...complicated.

And some strange force is pulling people in from other worlds. They call us Starfallen. The people in charge still haven't found a way to send us home yet.

[He looks around.]

Here, why don't we go into one of the shops so you can dry off? We can talk. There's a beloved set of human shops that sells hot drinks. The humans are so obsessed with them that they put them every few streets over. You can usually scout one out on every street.

[He spots and points at one nearby.]

They call them "Starbucks."
whistlestoptea: (awkward smile)

[personal profile] whistlestoptea 2023-05-04 08:47 pm (UTC)(link)
[ That sounds like about the best thing they could do right now. Raine's gaze follows where Hunter points. They give Hunter a (still slightly awkward) smile. ]

So... what do you call, if not "the Golden Guard"? I don't think I ever caught your name.

[ It's... odd, interacting with this person whom Raine had kinda figured was a kid, and yet the Emperor's closest confidante. It had never quite sat right with them, that whole situation, but the kid's previous loyalty to Belos had made him a liability. Much as a part of Raine wanted to say something, anything, they couldn't risk their ultimate goal.

It's a bit of a relief, then, that the boy seems to have found his own way away from Belos' grasp. ]
badbutsadboy: (024)

[personal profile] badbutsadboy 2023-05-04 08:57 pm (UTC)(link)
[He hadn't really told them his name, had he. He was just the Golden Guard. It was only to Belos that he was "family."]

It's Hunter.

[He starts to walk towards the Starbucks but still holds the umbrella over Raine's head. It's the kind of quietly kind gesture he never did when he was trying to always keep up such an air of power and importance.]

I don't know how much to tell you about the future. I'm worried that it might accidentally change it. A lot of things went wrong and only a few went right. Very narrowly.

And even they're...

[He breaks off into a sigh.]

Still a different kind of bad.

[But they still need to happen. Possibly. What if saying the wrong thing never leads to the Collector being in a position to stop the Day of Unity?]

So I'll just say that, depending on when exactly you're from, a lot of people wind up working as part of the rebellion. Myself included.

[personal profile] whistlestoptea 2023-05-04 09:03 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Raine's smile softens at the friendly gesture. Definitely not something they'd necessarily expected, but then again, Hunter seems like a good kid. ]

I think it's okay if you don't tell me everything. Wouldn't want to mess up the timeline.

But I'm glad to hear that, at least.

[ To be honest, it's a relief to not have to pretend for once. And to have someone else on their side. ]

Well, the last thing I remember before... dropping out of the sky? Was taking part in the Coven Day Parade.

[ And hadn't that been an absolute disaster. Raine almost shudders, and their mouth pulls down in a frown as they remember how they'd had to treat Eda.

They were determined, though. It was for her safety. For her kids' safety.

But Hunter doesn't need to know about all that, so they smooth their expression over quickly. ]

So... Hunter. Any human drinks you can recommend to me?
badbutsadboy: (071)

[personal profile] badbutsadboy 2023-05-04 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
[He folds up the umbrella when they gets inside.]

I got pulled here from at the end of the Day of Unity. But I've been here close to nine months.

[An easy timetable for Raine to imagine since it was a set date planned ahead.]

I don't drink coffee but it tastes good? If you add things to it, at least. They have, like, ten types of things they all call milk to add to it, though, even thought they're entirely different. Plus just as many sweeteners.

[He didn't drink it regularly. He was definitely human enough that it kept him awake. He already struggled to sleep as it was.]

But they also have very good tea. And hot chocolate.

[A pause.]

...I never actually bothered to learn what any of you all liked.

[The coven heads, that is. He is far enough removed from it that he almost laughs at the situation. Almost.]

You know, in this world, they sometimes sell mugs that say 'world's best boss'? I don't think if we lived here that I'd have ever gotten one of those.

[Someone's grown a little bit of a sense of humor since Raine saw him last. (Dylan's definitely rubbed off on him. Even Nico's got a dry sense of humor.) But there's just something inherently ridiculous about not even knowing if he likes tea.]
harageous: (like waves crashing against my head。)

hi beautiful hope u didn't wait long

[personal profile] harageous 2023-05-05 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
( for as much freedom life here in the wrong human realm affords, it is also incredibly restrictive. things are a little more lenient in her temporary hometown of sunset falls, a place already heavily steeped in oddities and magic, but the cities were much less generous. much less forgiving. humans didn't exactly have a favourable opinion of the strange and unusual.

although that's not so unusual in itself. it's always been that way, but there is an extra vitriol present here. a harsh contempt for the ones they call metas, forcing many to simply have to hide—which might also come at the added cost of joining up with one these dumb groups. it reminds her why vampires and the like chose to eternally live their lives in the shadows, back in the correct human realm.

it also reminds her of luz. eda thinks about luz a lot. about how difficult it had been for her being stuck in the demon realm and about how little she felt she belonged to the human one.

she cannot help but think about it again as she sits at the window counter of a cafe, watching as the people go by. how many of them are human? which ones walking among them were different? eda likes to think she's getting better at spotting them. better at divining whose who.

however she couldn't have divined that she would spot a ghost from across the street, looking like a brilliant bright spot on this already overly grey day. for the first few moments, eda doesn't believe it. there are so many possibilities after all. she's already been shown something she desperately wanted recently and had it yanked away.

she wasn't exactly excited at the thought of a second attempt.

no, there was actually a bit of rage starting to build underneath her skin. only for a moment, just a moment, because raine is still there. she watches long enough to see the first couple of raindrops fall, watching as they look up with wonder and fascination—

her chair clatters against the ground in her wake as eda swipes her bag and umbrella and launches herself out the door. she hits the glass door first, full body colliding against the door with an audible thump before she remembers she has to pull the door open.

then with a yank, she's rushing across the street. )

Raine!

( immediately called out, all too eager to get their attention. it's something of a wasted effort when she's already trying to close the distance between them, hurrying her way across the street with her umbrella in hand. in her excitement and her newfound aggressive need for confirmation, she had forgotten to actually open it.

it's been raining all day with only brief breaks in between. she knows better, knows to use the umbrella, but her heart feels like it's in her throat. it almost feels like all she can hear is the sound of her own pulse as she stops in front of raine, flustered and out of breath. )

You're going to get wet.

( too late for that. raine is already drenched from the sudden onslaught of rain and so is eda. the only difference is that eda is actually dressed for the weather. she looks unusually stylish, clad in human clothes, and a water resistant coat. not to mention a black scarf tied around her hair to hide the tips of her ears. )

You're completely soaked through. We have to get you out of the weather.

[ For a brief moment, Raine is very tempted to ask about the Day of Unity. How that goes. If they win.

Well. Obviously, at least some of them make it out alive. That's gotta be enough for now. They follow Hunter into the shop and looks around. ]

A coffee sounds nice.

[ They would like a break from all the tea, thank you very much.

Hunter's comment has Raine giving him another smile. ]

You know, I'm not sure any of us would have.

[ The world of covens is highly competitive, and you don't get to the top without stepping on a few necks. Besides, Raine doubts Hunter knew any better. ]

Where do you want to sit?
whistlestoptea: (serious)

hello <3

[personal profile] whistlestoptea 2023-05-05 09:26 am (UTC)(link)
[ The wonder of the human world rain has quite given away to shivering misery by the time a very familiar voice hits their ears. They gasp quietly, turn around -- and there she stands, her attire a little different than usual, but still the same Eda.

And their heart breaks, because they're going to have to rebuke her. For her safety, they try to convince themselves. Even if this is another world, they've got to keep the charade up. Because otherwise, there's no way she won't follow them; and oh, if things were different, there's nothing they'd rather want, but, well.

They've seen how quickly she jumps to sacrificing herself, and they would very much like for that to not happen.

With a heavy heart, they stand up straight and glare at her. ]

Eda. I told you to stay away.
whistlestoptea: (sideeye)

[personal profile] whistlestoptea 2023-05-05 09:30 am (UTC)(link)
[ Raine jumps a little when the woman comes close. They're not too fond of strangers getting into their personal bubble.

However, they can't deny the umbrella is welcome. Still, they're reserved when answering. ]

Ah, hello. Thank you.
harageous: (shock waves break me in two。)

[personal profile] harageous 2023-05-05 04:59 pm (UTC)(link)
( oh.

the immediate rejection feels like little less than a dagger to the heart, the sharp blade of it cutting into her so easily. she hadn't expected to be rebuffed, not like this and not from raine. not anymore. she wears the shock and hurt of it clearly on her face, her entire expression falling into something more somber.

her thoughts have been sent into a panic, desperately trying to figure out a way to recover. an odd part of her is relieved though, relieved that raine is really here. if it had been fake, it'd have been too good to be true, wouldn't it? maybe they'd have even kissed in the rain, like those dramatic moments in human films.

but that's not reality. )

Guess I've never been that good at listening.

( a little weakly, a little lamely, but her throat doesn't seem to want to work. she's a little too raw to better disguise the hurt in her voice, but she stands her ground.

slowly, she fumbles with the umbrella and casts it over the two of them. )

Let's— Let's not do this again. You just got here, right?

( please. please, please. )

We should talk.
whistlestoptea: (this is uncomfortable)

[personal profile] whistlestoptea 2023-05-05 05:09 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Nobody ever said it was easy: the path they chose. There's been many challenges along the way.

Few of them as painful as this.

And of course, of course Eda doesn't relent, only steps closer, and there's something she says -- again. But, well, they just fought. She's probably talking about that.

So, even though it just about breaks them, even though there's a part of them that's already picturing the two of them huddling up under the umbrealla together, they take a step backward. ]

You... you should go, Eda.
harageous: (these bad habits‚ they die too slow。)

[personal profile] harageous 2023-05-05 05:32 pm (UTC)(link)
( her stomach twists, feeling heavy and tight. eda cannot tell if she wants to cry or scream. she feels much like she did all that time again, trying to corner raine in an alleyway in a desperate attempt of trying to reconnect the two of them.

for a horrible moment, she fears that they might not let her help them at all. in this wrong human realm without support from anyone they once knew. nearly alone. well, no. she won't let that happen. she's confident that she could send someone in their direction if this goes from bad to worse. )

Listen, how about you hear me out first?

( let her get a foot back in the door. )

If you still don't want anything to do with me after . . . I won't fight it.

( an outright lie, but she says it like it were a truth. )

[ Titan, seeing her like this hurts. She's still begging them. And it stops them in their tracks, causes them to hesitate just a moment too long.

They're in a clearly foreign place. The human world, they assume. They don't know how either they or Eda got here. But they're far from the Boiling Isles now. It would certainly make the most sense to at least let her help them in this place.

So they relent, just a little, even if they are careful to still keep some of their air of aloofness. ]

I -- fine. I'll listen.
harageous: (we could make some real magic。)

[personal profile] harageous 2023-05-05 06:02 pm (UTC)(link)
( that's a win.

not very much of one, but it's a start.

it's a start! all eda needed was another start. she could get it right this time. )

Okay. Okay!

( she says, her entire expression lighting up with a mix of joy and relief. she barely seems bothered that they're still in the rain, her umbrella stretched out to cover neither of them. she twirls the handle in her hand then before stepping closer again, now effectively shielding them both from the weather. )

C'mon then, let's get out of the rain.

( she gestures to a space between buildings, where they have decorated it with string lights, plenty of fake plants, and a couple stone tables. it looks like the outdoor dining area of a restaurant that didn't bother to open today. they've even left the outdoor heater there, although chained to the wall.

it couldn't be more perfect. )

Here.

( then all too quickly, she's grabbing for raine's wrist and leading them over. )
whistlestoptea: (think)

[personal profile] whistlestoptea 2023-05-05 06:12 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Oh no, the way her face lights up is too adorable. And of course, Eda wastes absolutely no time at all grabbing them. They let it happen, while trying not to think too hard about the warmth of her hand on their wrist. ]

So... what exactly is this place? It's clearly not the Boiling Isles. And the people in the place where I landed weren't exactly welcoming, or forthcoming with the answers.
harageous: (wire fences aren't that hard to break。)

[personal profile] harageous 2023-05-05 06:31 pm (UTC)(link)
( the question hangs in the air, but eda doesn't bother to answer it yet. partially because she doesn't want to give out too much information too quickly and risk cutting their time together short and partially because this would be a better conversation to have while sitting down.

knowledge about the human realm isn't exactly widespread—precisely why it was such a pain in the ass to try to uncover how to actually get back there once she lost her personal portal. oh, the things you take for granted until they're gone.

once they're in the little alleyway, she all but guides raine down onto one of the benches. )

Here. Sit. You want to be close to that big metal thing.

( that's when she lets go, moving to click on the big red button against the back of the heater. it makes a soft whirring noise as it comes to life, gradually starting to glow with orange hues and radiate heat outward. )

Yeah, it's. . . It's the human realm, but the wrong one. It's. . . different here.

( she finally starts, now moving to sit across from them at the little table. )

There's all manner of creatures here, but we're not exactly welcome.

( a quick gesture to her headscarf, drawing attention to the fact she'd chosen to hide her ears. )

[ In all honesty? Fine by Raine. They're not especially eager to get separated from Eda. Might as well... savor the time spent sharing information.

They sit where she instructs them to and stare in wonder as the little machine starts glowing and heating up. It's probably not magic, but it kind of looks a lot like it. When she sits, they turn to face her. ]

That much was evident, judging by the reactions I've gotten so far. I haven't had a chance to procure something to cover my ears yet.

[ But, well... depending on how long they're stuck here, it might be a good idea. ]

How long have you been here?

( unsurprising answer.

interestingly enough, the idea of it still makes her rather irritated. for as much disrespect is expected at this point, she loathed the idea of raine having to experience that sort of derogatory treatment. it's probably better that she made the decision to move them somewhere away from the people.

she'd hate to make a scene right now.

what she does instead is slowly shrug off her weather-proof jacket and slide it across the table to raine. she's been wearing a loose sweaterknit top underneath, showing off the skin of one shoulder and the blackened gem on her chest. )

Take this for now.

( pulling up the hood should be enough. with the added bonus of being able to keep them somewhat dry. )

You can always bring it back to me later.

( and maybe then she could ask what they thought about this human rain. this little alcove afforded them a nice view of it and the gentle sound of the water hitting against the wooden roof above them.

it's nothing like the aggressive boiling rain of the isles.

but then there's that question. )

Months. If we're going to get back home, we need each other.

( actually, she's pretty confident that she makes it back one way or another without any time interruption. she's just already deciding that she will never tell raine that if that's what it takes to find more excuses to see each other. )

What, um, do you remember? Before you came here.
