TEST DRIVE MEME: OCTOBER EDITION

TEST DRIVE MEME

A Confluence, capitalized, is the converging of one or more supernatural forces. It’s common to see these at least once a month, but you might see two or three in an especially wild one. Only one of these confluences brings in people from other worlds.

Your arrival is a welcome one! Though not all the following confluences will be so joyous, the people of this world are taking you as a sign that things are finally settling down.

With that being said, you might notice that the history of this world is… changing. The world itself seems to be altering bit by bit as it settles into its new timeline. Where once metahumans as powerful as you were a rarity, now there’s a plethora of them.

You can be Neutral, living your life as an ordinary person without using your powers. But the moment you decide to make use of them, you need to make a choice.

Will you join the Guardian Alliance and use your powers for the sake of others?

Or will you join The Society, and use them for yourself?

BRAVE NEW WORLD. CENTRAL CITY.

You’re falling through the sky. Wherever you were before, whatever you were doing – it no longer matters. You find yourself hurtling towards the earth at unprecedented speeds. Thunder rolls and lightning crashes, and you smash into the hard pavement of an unfamiliar modern city.

But you’re fine. Not a scratch on you.

Around you, other people are falling like meteors. Colliding into the pavement of this street – it appears as though it was blocked off, as though someone knew you were coming. You barely have the time to process what just happened before you feel it. Something extends its presence to you, equal parts a welcome and a warning.

You are here for a reason, though that reason is yours to define. Do not let Her decide for you.

No sooner do those words enter your mind than do you hear the crash, barely having time to duck as something throws a car towards your head. The city has come alive – literally. Bits of iron and steel are weaving together to form an Iron Giant, one hellbent on knocking you and all those who fell with you right back into the sky.

It looks like you have a choice: fight, or flee.

Whether you defeat the enemy or wait to be rescued, eventually the Guilds will arrive. Heroes and villains in brilliant costumes surveying the scene, agreeing to work together just long enough to get all the new metahumans off of the streets and into somewhere more secure.

With a flash and a bang, you find yourself standing in what appears to be a school gymnasium. There, you’ve given medical treatment, something to eat, and told exactly what has happened to you – you’ve been displaced and granted into another world. You can go home, but it’s temporary – for now, at least. And they’re here to get you settled.

Once you’ve been given the introduction to your situation, you’re given the proverbial keys to a pretty lavish location. Hopefully, the LUXURY HOTEL they've put you up in will ease that sting.

The DIADEM HOTEL is usually reserved for the obscenely wealthy. Its rooms are enormous, the beds quite literally enchanted to offer the perfect night's sleep, and the food would usually cost your life savings for just a small taste. But given the circumstances, the Guilds feel its the least they can do to aid your transition into this world. everything is complimentary, and everyone gets access to a credit card provided by Winters Industries to spend on entertainment, clothing, and whatever other necessities they might need. The cards have an obscenely high limit and there doesn't seem to be an expectation for you to pay it back... unless you go completely overboard, that is.

There's a shopping center immediately across the street. It has an impressive array of outlet shops that cater to your every need. Food, clothing... and swords? If you can think of it, it's for sale. Although anything clearly supernatural or metahuman seems to be at a minimum and offered under the table. You can grab clothing made to withstand any superpower and a surprisingly mediocre Taco Bell order while you're at it.

There's a Super Cinema in the shopping complex across the street that's showing the premiere of RUN BOY RUN, a story about a young boy who is granted the ability to speak to people’s shoes – but spends every waking minute of his life ignoring his calling. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll rethink what it means to have powers – and you’ll come out with a new appreciation for fine footwear.

You’ll also find a celebration in the (quickly being rebuilt) streets. It’s become an impromptu street faire, with food vendors and other craftsmen popping up to celebrate the world returning to normal. A sign that the meta-energy isn’t going anywhere, anytime soon and the weird world you’ve been thrust into is happy to have you.

For now, at least. It’s Central City. Their opinions change like the weather.

HALLOWEEN FRIGHTS. SUNSET FALLS.

Sunset Falls is a terrifying place to live at the best of times, but it’s especially heinous during the month of October. The residents often find themselves plagued by out of towners who visit the leylines to conduct poorly researched rituals. Most of the time, these end with the summon beasts simply devouring the fools who brought them into this world before expiring.

This time, however…

A new shop appears within the village, Randor’s Resplendence, and it offers sweets, treats, and tricks. The proprietor, Rancor, is a tiny man of about fifty with a charming smile and a persuasive attitude. You will find yourself unable to even consider hurting this sweet old man, and though he might not be able to convince you to buy anything, you will find yourself wanting to take a candy or two.

Red candies cause your passions to run wild. You may find yourself suddenly falling in love, or hate. The further you give in to your passions, the hotter the fire within you runs. Careful not to burn anyone!

Blue candies cause you to rethink your life entirely. Abandon your name, abandon your job, and become who you were truly meant to be. If you are an ambitious person you become complacent, and slackers will suddenly find themselves becoming over achievers. However, the deeper you fall into this transformation – the more you find yourself wanting to scream. And a banshee’s scream is lethal.

Green candies seem to have a delayed effect. You may find yourself looking at an item you never cared about before – and now you want all of it. And you can and will attack that stranger for their pretty broach. Before long you will find yourself sprouting scales as the dragonification process sets in.

Yellow candies cause you to burst into song, singing your heart’s greatest desire for all to hear. Those who hear you will be drawn to your siren’s song.

All of these candies will wear off after 72 hours.

SOMETHING WICKED THIS WAY COMES. EXCELSIOR.

Excelsior has had it rough the last few months. Though the power grid is back on, the lingering effects of the outage have left their mark. Entertainment is scarce, and in these dire times, the kids make up their own fun. Rumors of a dangerous new game spread quickly throughout the schools, both civilian and guild alike. Passing by any infected device turns you into a player, whether you want to be or not.

It spreads through an app. The app, called SURVIVOR, appears on your home screen after you’ve encountered it. The icon is a garbled mess of pixels, seeming to glitch further the more you look at it.

The moment you interact with this app – whether to open it or to delete it – you’ve sealed your fate. The connection between your mind and body is severed, and your mind is thrust into the realm of the game. And much like a zombie from a horror movie, your body begins to move on its own – wandering the streets to spread the infection, at least until other orders come.

As for your mind – well, SURVIVOR is just as it says: it’s a survival game.

You find yourself standing in the middle of a replica of Excelsior. Some will find themselves designed as HUNTERS, armed with a weapon of their choice and told to do as Hunters do: hunt. Hunters who fail to fulfill their roles will find themselves forced into it: they'll be transformed into a monstrous creature, feral, bloodthirsty, and lacking self control. There are many Hunters in the game who have already suffered this fate; they stalk the streets, eager to find prey to devour.

The rest are PREY. There are more prey than Hunters, and they are given no weapons. Death in this simulated world is not permanent, though the pain is very real. Any who fall to the hunters will find themselves trapped in a digital hell, able to watch but do nothing to assist their team until the Gamemaker resets the match. While Prey are given no weapons, they are welcome to find makeshift weapons to utilize to the best of their abilities.

Discerning who is a Hunter and who is Prey is easy: clothing is color-coded. Hunters are dressed in all black, Prey all have bright colors. Changing clothing within the game is not possible, but Prey may attempt to hide what they are by painting over their clothes with paint, or dirt, but it's not a permanent fix, and any substances will fade after an hour, leaving them to need to find something else to cover it with.

In order to survive this nightmare you must outwit, outlast, and outstand your opponents – and, most of all, outsmart the Gamemaker. There are weaknesses in the code that can be manipulated by magic, technology, or might – break the game to break free.
CLIFF NOTES.

➢ In Central City, the city itself is coming alive - forming into a massive Iron Giant that's intent on shoving Starfallen right back to where they had originally come from.

➢ Off in Sunset Falls, tourists are enjoying all things Halloween-y. There is also a new shop that is offering out some suspicious candies that, depending on the type, cause different status effects.

➢ Excelsior is experiencing a virus problem - one that is causing people to get stuck in a virtual reality horror game where everyone must fight to survive.

➢ You do not need an invite to play on the TDM! But you do need an invite to join the game. Current players can extend one invite this cycle.

Current Players are welcome to treat this as a bonus event. These events are canonically happening within the game but can be largely ignored if you'd prefer to use the month for personal plots.

Yyyep, that sure is a costume! Donnie will have to ask him later how he manages not to get tangled up with all those tassels.

"Energy? -it's not going to blow up, is it?" He figures this is a fair question- he'd hate for his new baby to explode before he has a chance to make good use of all the upgrades he's made since version one.

Even then, he's spinning the metal staff, all gunmetal with violet accents. His battle shell is technically already using energy, rotors carrying him higher but not too high as to be out of range to hear Mister Cowboy. The end of the staff opens up and slides down slightly as a bright energy blade of heliotrope glows to life. Whether it's what Jules means or not, this is something Donnie's been meaning to try out anyway.

"Uhh... I'll try."

Jules straightens up and tries to focus, bracing for some sort of invisible impact and gazing up. The forces are everywhere around them... sometimes he wonders how those attuned to them ever manage to concentrate. Energy blade. Nice, yeah, he can probably work with that, hopefully.

From below Donatello there's a flash of green light around Jules' hands, a deep breath in, and Still Force spills out. He can see it, and hey, maybe the turtle can see it too, hard to tell in new worlds like this. His hands whip around, sending the energy up and around the iron giant with a strange and hauntingly beautiful glow. The moment he does the creature seems to flag and slow, like the life's being drained from it.

All that energy, all that force is getting pulled away, not just the power driving the giant machine, but also it's kinetic energy, it's temporal energy. Still Force brings slowness, entropy and the end of inertia.

"Go for it!"

But it has to go somewhere, and right now Jules is gritting his teeth, struggling to contain all that force in one spot. One hand turns, sending the energy up to Donnie, right into his staff to give his blade the power boost of a lifetime while most of it manages to sink into the ground through his feet, breaking the street up as grasses and flowers and other plants seem to spur to life in the blink of an eye all around him.

Donnie's not quite sure what he's seeing, but he's definitely seeing something! It prompts him to lower his goggles, watching as readings flicker from both technical and supernatural perspectives. "What the-"

He's depowering it somehow! It's simultaneously fascinating and frightening, and Donnie looks down at Jules, tracing whatever energies are flowing between the human and the big metal giant.

"-Whoa!" Donnie jerks his head back as he feels the power surge through his tech-, the blade crackling, and he has to do a quick readjustment to the output levels before it blows itself out, resulting in a ridiculously huge blade that had no business on the end of a stick. The turtle teen lets out a cackle. "Jazzed! Let's do this!"

He flies at the sluggish metal behemoth, going right for the head as he swings his weapon back and around, cleaving through whatever was holding it together like butter.

'Something' sure is a descriptor that matches what's happening! Honestly if someone asked Jules to explain it he'd have a hard time too. Given that slowed down state, he has time, all he has to do is focus. It's like being a dam standing between a giant reservoir and the world around him. Not necessarily controlling, but redirecting.

Amber eyes glance up, watching purple jump out between the green, perhaps even sparing a thought for the fitting combination of colours before the revved up energy blade swings down, cutting off the robot's head worryingly easily.

Well damn, he did have a good use for it after all. Colour him impressed.

There's work to be done, he has to keep the energy drain going until the robot falls to the ground, minimizing the damage it can do as it's power deactivates. This of course leaves Donnie swinging around a sword that looks more like someone stuck a handle on the end of a flagpole. He's panting by the end of it, finally releasing his grasp on those universal forces and relaxing.

"Haaah... Not bad. Not bad." Even tired, there's a cocky little grin remaining.

"Ohhhhmygosh that was so cool!" Donnie blurts right after he lands by Jules in his miniature...field? Oh wow.

He collapses his staff, a little disappointed that the extra-juiced blade hadn't stuck around but he's going to have to check things later to make sure it hasn't burned out anything. At least they won't have to worry about clean-up duty, although a part of him would love to salvage from the now inanimate parts of the giant they'd just felled.

"You all good?" The grin's a good sign anyway, but it's pretty clear it's not this guy's first rodeo.

Jules waves his hand a few times, leaning back and stretching out, just staring at the sky for a moment before he glances back to Donnie.

"Yeah. I'm good. Just a lot of energy in that guy." Tug, and the hood comes back up, looking more like a hero again. Of course, the scrap metal is still littering the street now, really just in the way.

Jules shakes his head. "So uhh... I just got here but. Where exactly is here?" He's got a lot of questions, but that one's up first.
purplexing: (beepboop)

[personal profile] purplexing 2023-10-24 04:56 pm (UTC)(link)
"You did? Oh," Donnie says as he looks skyward, swinging his goggles back over his eyes again. "Well, at least that's more like...normal? Around here?"

He looks over at Jules again, studying him a moment behind whatever readouts his goggles offer before nudging them back up. "Currently you are in Central City, Michigan," he says with just a tiny hint of distaste but at least it isn't New Jersey. "In a version of Earth that is likely not one you are exclusively familiar with- if you are from an Earth to begin with, of course."

Donnie gestures skyward with a vague motion. "There's an event called a Confluence that opens up in the skies above a random city, or at least randomly between several cities so far as have been documented, which opens up...some kind of gateway that basically dumps someone from another dimension into this one."
gothcowboy: (pic#16622727)

Hi! The weekend sure got away from me whoops.

[personal profile] gothcowboy 2023-10-29 02:19 pm (UTC)(link)
"... Michigan!?" Really? He just blinks, looking about in disbelief. It does feel particularly earth-like, actually. Not to far from his time period if at all.

"Guess I was right... This sure isn't Missouri. Though we also called our city Central City. Guess no matter where you go folks aren't too creative." And with that, the hint of country to his accent is perhaps much clearer. That's right, he's technically from the south!

"Yeah, I got an earth. I came from the Badlands suburb in Central City Missouri... Right on the border of Kansas. Fair guess you haven't heard of it?" It's the same place the Flash comes from, conveniently. or at least one of the Flash's. Jules has met several since then. Still, he listens in, taking little mental notes and then nodding along.

"Sounds about right... I gotta say. I only got these powers like a week ago, and I've already been in more universes than I ever considered. Getting real tired of travelling like this."
purplexing: (dubious leo plans)

Hellooo! Haha, it happens

[personal profile] purplexing 2023-10-29 04:25 pm (UTC)(link)
"Nope, first I've heard of a Central City was when I got dumped here. Generally speaking, that is- I came in over Excelsior in Washington. Never been this far outside of New York before, otherwise."

Not quite the way he'd ever expected to see other places, that's for sure.

Donnie blinks then. "Sounds like you've been busy. But I guess that's one way to get a feel for new powers." It's basically how he and his brothers figured out their own, jumping right into it. "That was pretty wild by the way."
gothcowboy: (pic#16622727)

[personal profile] gothcowboy 2023-10-29 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
One hand props on his hip, a quiet smile settling over his lips as he nods. "Hah, you're even further from home than me. There a lot of uh..." He pauses, considering. "Turtles? In the world you come from?" He's guessing, the shells too smooth for a tortoise right... But they are on land. Hmmm.

"You're telling me! Cool tech you've got there." He looks over the fallen wreckage of iron, cut neatly through the neck, then back to Donnie with a more casual shrug. "Should we get out of here then? I feel like there's a lot I need to fill in before I try and jump out of here."

He can still see the forces around, so that's a good sign. But no hint of a speedster nearby.
purplexing: (mystic adds flavor)

[personal profile] purplexing 2023-10-30 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
At least he doesn't have to correct the guy with that guess. Still, Donnie shakes his head. Now that he's not moving around, it's easier to see that the shell's artificial, probably covering his actual one, black metal hooking over his shoulders and forming a segmented armor of sorts.

"Not really. There's only four of us- I have three brothers. One of them's here. But we're technically mutants. Normally we don't uh...mingle with humans on the account of this whole situation, so that's kind of one of the nice things about this crazy place I guess."

Compliments on his tech will always get a good response from him, the turtle grinning broadly. "Thanks! I make all my stuff. I will probably have to check later to make sure the wiring hasn't fried from all that extra output though." He casts a look around before nodding. As much as the relative climate regarding Starfallen has become around here, Donnie's still a bit wary about getting noticed by any of the guilds.

"Yeah, let's go before they stick us with clean-up duty," he says, gesturing. "Oh, I'm Donnie by the way."
gothcowboy: (pic#16622698)

[personal profile] gothcowboy 2023-10-30 02:41 pm (UTC)(link)
In truth, if he had said the battle shell was part of his own Jules wouldn't have any reason to disbelieve him, at least at first. Who knows how things work! He does scoff just a bit at the mention of mutants.

"Pretty sure every super's a mutant of some sort these days. Least where I'm from." He gives a little shrug. "I got my powers when a bunch of glowing green rain fell down on the city."

Jules is happy to follow along, falling in beside him with the faint click of cowboy boots on pavement. "The names Jules. Or uh... Circuitbreaker if you wanna go by hero names. Pretty new to this stuff still." He returns, a casual smile lingering as they slip off towards somewhere less conspicuous. "I doubt I'll be here long, but if I am, I wouldn't mind checking out some of the stuff you can make. It's handy to have something to put excess energy into."

And oh boy, is he probably wrong there. Travelling out will likely be far harder than travelling in.
purplexing: (hm?)

[personal profile] purplexing 2023-10-30 04:53 pm (UTC)(link)
"I'm sorry, what-" Donnie says as he has to stare for a moment. "Glowing green rain. ...that sounds like a nightmare. I mean, technically we were mutated by some alchemist's glowing green ooze, but then later on he just loaded up some oozequitoes with it and sent them out to mutate humans. Kind of glad he didn't resort to seeding clouds- glowing green rain is so very specific. Any idea where it came from?"

He cuts down an alleyway so they can avoid too much foot traffic as people inevitably start trickling back outside now that the giant threat is taken care of. "Circuitbreaker, huh? That's a pretty cool hero name. Don't really have one myself, but I guess it seems to be a thing here if you stick with any of the guilds."

Ah, he should probably mention that. "There's two of them, the Alliance and the Society. They're made up of local Metas- people with superpowers, and meant to help Starfallen out- that's what they call us, the ones who came in from other worlds. Actually you're lucky you came in when you did, meta-politics were sort of super screwed up not too long ago. At least the government doesn't have any involvement with things now, but there's still rules, and if you're unaffiliated and caught using your powers, I think they still come down on you hard."

A pain, but not one Donnie hasn't been able to get around, although even he knows he probably can't be too careless when he's using his tech in lieu of his ninpō.

"So your ability is...energy transference of some sort? If you can store excess energy, it shouldn't be too hard to come up with some kind of portable battery pack. You use weapons any or do you just shift energy around?"
gothcowboy: (pic#16622697)

[personal profile] gothcowboy 2023-11-01 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
"Yeah, same thoughts. Something about being a hero and strange glowing green things, right? No clue though." He shrugs, stifling a small laugh before shaking his head. "You could always make one up. Like... Uh. Purple Spinner, or something." Only slightly joking, give him a bit of time to workshop something cooler.

His head bobs along, soaking in the information as best it can. Alliance, Society. Sure, ambiguous ass names that may or may not mean anything.

"Honestly I just use that most of the time, it's pretty versatile. Depends what I need to do with it. Do you have any speedsters here? Someone that goes by the Flash, or the like?" This is incredibly relevant information, because there's ALWAYS a Flash involved somewhere, with Jules' luck.
purplexing: (i know things i wish i didn't)

[personal profile] purplexing 2023-11-01 04:28 am (UTC)(link)
"Purple Spinner. Yeah, no." Donnie shoots that down pretty quickly as he gives Jules a flat look. "Anyway it seems to be more of a thing for people in the guilds. I've been avoiding them so far, myself. Although I guess so long as the government isn't keeping tabs on Starfallen anymore, it probably wouldn't hurt to drop by the Diadem Hotel. They usually offer free rooming for newcomers for about a month I think? And you might still be able to get a credit card to buy anything you need while you get settled in."

Donnie nods, already considering designs for specialized battery packs and potential ways someone with such abilities can make use of energy. He blinks at the question.

"Speedsters..? Hm..." He closes his eyes for a moment, light flickering briefly over his left forearm like some kind of staticky interference. After a moment, he shakes his head. "No, don't think I've seen anyone going by or referencing the Flash, at least over the main platform everyone uses. Can't say I've met any speedsters either, but then they might just hang out in other cities."
gothcowboy: (Default)

[personal profile] gothcowboy 2023-11-01 03:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Pfft, he didn't expect that to get far, in fairness. "Doesn't sound like my kind of scene either, probably. Neither of those names screams 'transparent'." Free rooming though? That he might just perk up a bit for. New place and all. "Don't really plan on staying long. Just gotta find someone to help jump start me out of here... Or a really big pile of force to use."

Either works.

That does give a little bit of concern. "You'd know em if they were around. Faster than a speeding bullet, stuff like that. I don't think it's the most subtle power." If there's none here then... Well, that cuts off Jules' options quite a bit, his eyes glance over to the blinking light, curious, but saving that for later as they walk.

"Great... So. Where to, Donnie?"
purplexing: (dubious leo plans)

[personal profile] purplexing 2023-11-01 05:32 pm (UTC)(link)
The turtle shrugs. "I mean, the info on them is pretty straightforward, but if you want the basic rundown, Alliance is for heroing and Society is for the opposite."

Powers aren't usually subtle once they're being applied, but Donnie gives it a little more thought before he shakes his head again. "Well, either they've been too fast for me to notice or they haven't been around. I've met a guy who was dressed like a bat though. Oh, and I know a Wonder Woman! She's so cool..." He might go a little starry-eyed there for a sec.

"-oh, well...I can show you were the hotel is? You hungry or anything? There's a cafe on the way and I could totally go for an iced coffee."
gothcowboy: (pic#16622715)

[personal profile] gothcowboy 2023-11-02 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
"Right... of course. Makes sense." In that it doesn't. Not to him. But the whole thing has a very old school Comic vibe that Jules can appreciate.

One brow lift... "You mean. Batman? Like, THE Batman?!" Granted, as far as he knows a few people have taken the name, but still, that's a big one!

His head shakes, letting out a sigh. "Honestly a coffee sounds great about now, yes please."

(( That's probably a good wrapping point! Thanks for the neat lil thread! :) ))
