Usually, Will would balk at someone physically shielding him. (Being recklessly heroic is his thing, thank you very much.) But he doesn't have a weapon and Apollo does. His 'Demigod Care Bear Stare' and plague powers (something to bring up to his dad when they're not fighting some unknown creature) are both very new and untested.

Instead, he looks for a good way out. "There's a ridge nearby. If we can get there before it does, you'll have a better angle."

As he says this, a long snout pokes out of the underbrush.
