Guidelines
In lieu of a CR meme, Meta Heroes will be holding bi-monthly plot workshops. These memes are designed to help players brainstorm, develop, and shape their character arcs and personal plots into something that engages them. (If players feel that this meme is not serving the function of a traditional CR meme and would like to see the inclusion of a more traditional CR meme in the future, please reach out to us!)
Players with player plot and character arc ideas — no matter how pie in the sky or early in development — should post top levels to this entry using the form below. These posts will include character hooks and motivations, general plot ideas, and potential roles in others' plots.
Your ideas can be as specific or as general as you want — e.g., "I want my character to start pursuing politics" or "I want to run a plot where Spider-Man takes down a serial bank robber who's funding meta-drug experiments on children." This is not the place to censor yourself! Put it all out there!
What we do want to impress is more specific posts will make plotting smoother. Try to avoid 'down for anything' posts and comments — if you do not feel you have specific ideas to throw out, we encourage you to simply tag around and collaborate with others. This meme can't succeed without both posts and replies!
In addition to player replies, the mods will have two top levels.
The first, MOD QUESTIONS, is a space for players to ask clarifying questions about things like player plot tier of certain ideas and the ability to impact aspects of the setting or world in substantial ways. We can provide quicker approvals on these memes to help get things rolling to a player plot submission.
The second, SETTING IMPACT, will have a form for players to pitch larger-scale plots (including those that they may not want to run themselves, or that they don't have a character who can spearhead). This section is for players to brainstorm and collaborate on big ways to engage and alter the setting. We encourage players to think creatively! We will also offer our two cents where possible, but if you feel something needs our attention, feel free to drop a direct link to the comment in the 'mod questions' header too.
Event Information
To facilitate your plotting for the coming month, here's a quick preview of the February event, which will be Valentine's themed! Love Potion #9 will take place during a love-themed festival in Sunset Falls while the characters are touring their new housing. Your opt-out option is to not be in Sunset Falls at that time.
The main thrust of the event is a love spell that will push characters into rom-com trope scenarios like Meet Cutes, as well as prompting confessions of real (and manufactured) feelings. Not just romantic love confessions, but also the compulsion to just tell people how you really feel — family, friendship. Get sappy!
The event will also include options for bizarre effects as a result of some of the festival food. Effects include exceptional boldness, emoji eyes, and fireworks when touching.

I'm also down for Love Potion #9 shenanigans. Up for overshare, receiving end of pastries, and nemeses who get beer later (he doesn't hold a HUGE grudge tho). Also always down for hot makeouts that's why he's a sexy pirate.
Balthier is a pirate (though is generally not bent on hurting anyone). He currently thinks he's a loner and keeps actually feelings pretty tight, but is in need of found family/friends. He probably won't fully believe any love spell shenanigans but will be surprised that he liked feeling attached to someone (in case any of that is useful).

Balthier is leaning hard into unlimited cash and nice things, so he's probably going to be scoping out any antique stores, or anywhere that sells nice clothes, wine, food, etc. He also would have been checking out housing in Sunset Falls.
He is definitely interested in the market or anything else that is busy. He's amused by anything new/different and probably going to pocket some snacks for future use.
I don't think he'd go into the spooky woods alone but he'd 100% follow someone there.
He is going to lead a charge on Cupid's mansion at some point. He's noticed Cupid appearing, noticed the Manor, and is like power, magic, and nice things? I'm there.
I think for set-up or friendship things, the arc I'm gearing him towards is that he thought he was affirmed at home, but the removal of (a) Fran (b) his father/the Empire to fight against is leaving him feeling pretty untethered/like that kid he was when he ran away at 16. I def want him to expand his sense of community/family, but letting the rest grow orgaically.
Does that give some ideas? Lemme know if there's specific stuff you want me to try to tease out/bring up/etc. too :)

So my question is this: is Balthier still wearing canon-typical clothes for him? Because if so, meeting could easily be handled by David having something (very positive) to say about the clothing. Without that David could bump into him and in the moment they could both be shocked by the fireworks and implication and then as they talk realize that yeah, fuck 'fate' especially since this one is clearly BS.

Yes -- I have him essentially leaning into guild money to buy absurd fashion. There's a link to his outfit in my top level, but it's real similar. I'm down for clothing angle. I am also super amused by the fireworks bump so into either of those (might create more tension/something to deal with if they have issue of "is this real"). We could also go white lily pin spell and like...rom comm meet cute stuff re: i like ur clothes and still have the realizing this isn't real/it's friends not love. IDK if I made your job easier or harder haha. They all sound good.
I also just decided to update Balthier's canon point to end of game cause I just wasn't getting the tension I wanted, so he's going to be a little rawer (re: killed my dad who was a narcissist, and also realized I was in love with the princess and now I'm uh never gonna tell her).

Okay, so now I'm torn between fireworks bump where David would be like 'dude just because it's 'fashion' and 'expensive' doesn't mean you should wear it, and just meet cute liking different fashions. Most of my build for David's pin stuff is around the idea of David falling into the 'always a bridesmaid' mentality and helping other people out, not knowing something is out there for him. And that could be amusing with Balthier. Maybe built on a 'Balthier already has his eyes on someone else' or something.
A, love the new canon-point choice. Like, Balthier from late game hurts so much. And you then get the end credits sketch images and I was so sad because he COULD have had a good family once. But yeah. That.

And yeesssss. I RPed him from this canon point last time and loved it. I wanted to play with what if he didn't get the closure with dad, but I actually think I find the loss and realization that dad was ALWAYS shitty a lot more heartbreaking/engaging, and I really like him grappling with like oh shit I didn't hate leadership/power I just hated....having to navigate it under my abusive dad. So I'm excited to dig into that again. I just love him so much and I'm glad someone else does too :3 (I wasn't in RP community when the games came out so I'm delighted there's still some people who enjoy him with me).

Balthier is one of the most interestingly written male characters in FF history. I'm normally a person who ends up liking some NPC over the playable characters but FFXIII and FFVI are the exceptions and in both it is the complicated thief guy that wins my heart.

Also same on FF. I actually usually don't like thief/rogue types but Balthier is an all time favorite character. I think his motivations paired with his moral line are super compelling. I personally like the Ashe x Balthier ship specifically for Ashe mirroring some of dad's power issues and the like OH FUCK AM I DATING MY SHITTY PARENT? But also maybe I do want to be in power/help the world? I ALSO JUST REALLY LOVE Fran x Balthier as friends b/c we never get good m|f friendships (it's also why I love Cap and Natasha as friends in Winter Soldier).
